  • Is my paint too hard for ScratchX?

I've finally started my very first detail with all my Meguiar's products today on my new 06 black H2. Of course, immediately when I picked up the car I noticed the obscene amount of swirls when the car hit the sun. So I ordered a large set of Meguiar's products (should've ordered a G100 while I was at it).

So my products came in today and I proceeded to wash. I washed with Gold class. Then clayed with Smooth Surface clay. I started late so I was saving the paint cleaning and waxing for the weekend. However, I did have time to test out a small area with ScratchX. Either, I'm not being passionate enough with it or my paint is extremely hard! I tried 4 applications of ScratchX w/ both an even coat applicator and a hi-tech applicator and buffed off with SS microfiber. Every application I checked with my Brinkmann's Xenon and could hardly tell a difference!

Please help! What should I do? I don't want to do my whole car like this without some results. Am I gonna have to break down and buy a G100? Or can I manage? I thought that being a brand new car it would be easy to do, but dang! Or maybe I'm just being anal. I just want to start this black car right. If you know what I'm saying.

"Passion" is the key word. ScratchX is a work-in product. You might wanna try a lil harder and see if anything changes. If that works though, doing the whole car might be quite tiresome. You might want to get a g100 and some 83 and try that out.

I had better luck with a 100% terry cloth rather than the applicators.

The other thing to consider is that some scratches are just too deep for ScratchX to do much of anything. ScratchX works wonders on small, very surface level scratches, but no product is going to be able to hide deeper scratches, even if they don't extend past the clear coat into the color coat.

Sometimes you are just limited to improving the area around the scratch to make it less noticable.

I've come across paint systems where ScratchX, applied with passion, up to 3 times to a small area had little or no effect. The last Hummer I worked on had very hard paint, so you just might have to try machine cleaning.

Thanks Mike. That's what I thought. Do you think the G100 will be sufficient? I want a showroom shine!
