  • Is this Orange Peel?

Hi guys. Recently I have posted a thread about my car being painted. Here is the thread.
Since the an inncident me involving me hitting a ditch over the summer, (See thread) http://www.g1teg.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=18617&highlight=dodge+stealth I decided to get a new bumper and get the car painted. It turned out awsome what can I say. We did my hood, new bumper, roof, and mirrors. Cost 360$. :D Here is

However, it has been about a month and a half now, and there seems to be running or something that appeared after about a week it was freshly painted. It is only on the parts being painted of course. It seems that the new paint has lost some of the "sharpness" and it is more dull than my old paint, but still shiny in a sense. There are big runs throughout the hood and sides that are hard to get to show up on camera, but are defintly noticeable in person.

I was wondering, is this orange peel? MY friends dad said it should come right out if we buff it but we have since to do that. Will this come out and will it looks good again? Will a If I buy a G-100 will I be able to get this out? do this If I bought one? Thanks!

Here is about a day after it being painted, notice no runs.

Now this is today, look at the snake like runs that goes through the hood, and the fact that it is more dull.

I wouldn’t call it orange peel but it could be a sort of variation in the orange peel.

Maybe it would help to compare what you have to the examples shown in Sherwin-Williams troubleshooting guide.

Called dieback orange peel dont happen after the paint is applied its there from the getgo and then sanded out. This happens sometimes as the paint cures and the solvents evaporate. How soon was the paint color sanded and buffed? This looks to be a bad case of it as the marks look like they are in the base or primer .. most likely from rushing without proper cure/flash times.

This is the reason I let 2k primer set for 2-3 days sand and let it set preferably in the sun for an hour or 2. Then do my base PPG says u can top coat after 30 min max 12 hours. I let my base sit for at least 3 hours then top coat. I know this cant be done in production shops but its a proven method for show work..

This condition is called dieback? I've never heard of that one before. Could this condition have been caused by him waxing the paint too soon?

I noticed in his other thread he stated that he applied NXT wax to his car, but I don't know how long he waited to do that after the car was painted.

              per Sherwin-Williams:

              LOSS OF GLOSS
              (Hazing, Dulling, Dieback, Matting, Weathering)

A dulling of the gloss as the film dries or ages.

Do I need to wet sand to fix this? When I rub my hand on it, I baaaaaaaaaarly feel it. I tried sratch-x and that didnt work.

If you can feel it at all I’d think (but I could easily be wrong) that it would at least need compounding with a rotary, maybe wetsanding.

u might try a color sand and buff with a rotory . But from the looks of it its below the clear in the base/primer.. Think of it this way if u put a piece of glass over a tablecloth that is wrinkled and creased the top of the glass will be smooth but it will magnify the wrinkles..

I am afraid that u may have to sand redo the base and clear the hood again.

Is this the only area that did this? I see in your post that the roof and bumber were also painted.

Why can't you get the paint shop to correct their work?

It says UPS. Most likely someone painted over grease marker I'd say.
