  • ScratchX: How many applications will remove the Clear Coat?

    Hi all,

I guess most people here would have owned or used ScratchX at least a couple of times.

Just wondering, does anybody knows how many applications of ScratchX will result in removing the clear coat entirely?

Judging by the usefulness of ScratchX in removing scratches and etching, I'm sure it's useful for us to know the threshold. Sometimes, the itch to remove the defects is so overwhelming that one is tempted to just apply and apply.....

    Any experts out there?

    Cheers,
    Jet

Usually it takes 2 to 3 applications to remove the defect. Depending on how hard is your paint, it might take more. Deep schatches will be harder to remove. At this point in my opinion it will improve its apearance. I guess there are going to be times that you have to let it be since you don't want to remove too much paint.

This question comes up at almost every Saturday Detailing Classes we teach and it comes up often on the forum. Unless you're working on a really thin clear coat because some detailer or painters helper has buffed too long with really aggressive products, then chances are very good you rubbing with your four fingers on a soft foam applicator pad with ScratchX is the least of your worries and getting the scratches out is actually all you should be focused on.

It's really not a concern. Put it this way, in all the years I've been using ScratchX and demonstrating ScratchX, often times in front of dozens of sets of eyes... I've never rubbed through a single clear coat finish

It's the least of your worries.

On another note, if you keep finding lots and lots of swirls, you may want to look at how they are getting there.

Perhaps higher quality towels, sponges, using the two-bucket system, etc will stop most of the swirls from ever appearing.

This is a very difficult question, because the cutting ability depends on more than the factor product, in this case ScratchX.

It depends also on how thick and how hard your paint is and on the application themselves - what kind of applikator is using with how much pressure and how long ScratchX would be applied.
