  • Nu Finish...what is it?

    Hello Everyone!

I have a question about Nu Finish Polish. What is it classified as? (pure polish, wax, cleaner wax). What would it be under the Meguiars name (step)? Also, does it have any protective properties since it's a 'polish' after all? I'm just curious here...Thanks!

It's a cleaner/wax. Probably in the range of a ColorX type products but probably not as effective.

Forget what the word on the label says, plug any product into the category it fits into in the 5-Step Paint Care Cycle and you can know or understand what a product is not by the words on the label, but by what the product actually does.

    Step 1 - Wash
    Step 2 - Surface Prep
    Step 3 - Polish
    Step 4 - Protect
    Step 5 - Maintain

Nu-Finish fits into Step 4, thus it's a paint protectant no matter what name they put on the label. Same for products like Zaino Z2, Sal uses the word, "Polish" on the label but the primary purpose of the product is to seal and protect the paint, thus it's a paint protection product.

There are are basically two types of polishes on the market, cleaner/polishes and pure polishes, Meguiar's is one of the few companies that actually offers a non-abrasive pure polish, that is a product in which the primary purpose is to create gloss or beauty, not abrade the paint or leave behind a sacrificial barrier coating of protection.

    Does this help?

It's actually only a polish. They call themselves the once a year car polish and even state that their product contains no wax.

Define the word polish as they use it.

Does the product claim to protect the paint?

Remember, there are no "Wax Police", everyone is free to call a product by whatever name they like, but I'll stick by what I wrote above, if the product protects the paint, that is, at least one of the goals behind the application of the product is to leave something behind on the finish that will act to be a barrier coating between the paint and anything that could come into contact with the paint as in the idea of protecting the paint, then it's a paint protectant whether you call it a polish, a wax, a sealant, a paint protectant, or fill-in-the-blank.

Who cares what is, all you need to know is don't use it lol

            off their web site
"Q: What is the difference between a polish and a conventional wax?

A: Conventional waxes don't last long because the common ingredient in these products, carnauba wax, breaks down quickly from everyday conditions. Neither Nu Finish Liquid nor Paste Car Polish contain carnauba waxes. No other liquid or paste products can make that claim!

Nu Finish is made up of a series of zinc cross-linking polymer emulsions that help Nu Finish last longer than any other polish on the market. This is why Nu Finish is called "The-Once-A-Year Car Polish." Watch how Nu Finish makes water bead month after month."

I guess they are implying that beading means that their is protection

Its just a cleaner-sealant, and a strong cleaner at that. Its called a polish because it cant be called a wax because there is no wax in it. It could be called a cleaner- sealant but most people dont know what a sealant is. All they know is wax and polish.

Neither Nu Finish Liquid nor Paste Car Polish contain carnauba waxes.

The Qualifyer is "carnauba," which essentially means it contains a Synthetic Wax-Like substance they refer to as "series of zinc cross-linking polymer emulsions."

                  Another exceprt reads:
"Conventional waxes don't last long because the common ingredient in these products, carnauba wax, breaks down quickly from everyday conditions."

The truth is that any protectant breaks down relatively quickely even the Meguiar's Nxt Tech Wax, the new Mothers. However, top-tier waxes such as Mother's FX, Zymol, and Nxt Tech will outlast most waxes on the market today. The "Once-A-Year" thing is a myth unless you only wax once a year. I am assuming most of you re-apply a protectant each time you wash your car. IT just makes sense to prevent oxidation, protect from tar, sap, droppings, and insects. Essentially, no matter what you put on, it will break down no matter what you do, so the solution is to just add more.

I do belive that traces of any product will be left over for a year, but you never want to have the protectant worn down to only trace amounts.
