  • Did I use the right stuff>>>

    Hi,
Just got my shiny blaze red 91 mazda mx-6 and I haven't waxed a car in over 14 years!!

So last friday it was a beautiful 60 degrees and cloudy..perfect waxing weather..

Headed down to my store and stocked up..

I got all I could.. NXT wax (never spent 19 bucks for wax in my life!!), wax cleaner/wax, tire shine, NXT tech protect, wheel cleaner, thats it for meguiar's stuff for now.. thats all they had boo hoo...

My car is bright red..was repainted at some point.. No real swirl marks anywhere or scratches..Only real problems are the trunklid and roof are a kind of pinkinsh from a I quess an older paint job or a lower quality one.. Also front and rear bumpers are not as shiny as the rest of car..

    But everything else is fine..

I used the cleaner wax first.. Then the NXT.. Car is super super shiny.. My mailman was blown away when I told my car was 15 years old>>When I park at a store, my lil' 6 gets noticed..

But I wonder what more can I do??
Does meguiars make anything else I can use?? Do I need to?? I noticed a paint cleaner that had a number 1 on it..Where is the number 2 or 3?? What are they.. I want my car to look as well as I can get it..

But being as I just used the NXT wax, should I just stay with that?? I'll start all over again if I have to..

And with this NXT wax, how many times should I re-apply it?? once a month during the summer.. I live on an island with a beach in New Jersey, so I have a lot of sun and salt air.. I willl wash her at least 1-2 times a week..

    thanx..

and one of the reasons I will only buy meguiars is because I love Barry's show on speed channel and he seems like such a nice guy I want to give him my buisness..Someone like that I know would only sell the best stuff, I didn't even bother lookin at the other brands.. But Ive known of his products since I was a car geek kid from the 70's and 80's LOL>>>

First off, to MOL. You'll find a great bunch of folks here willing to help you every step of the way.

My car is bright red..was repainted at some point.. No real swirl marks anywhere or scratches..Only real problems are the trunklid and roof are a kind of pinkinsh from a I quess an older paint job or a lower quality one.. Also front and rear bumpers are not as shiny as the rest of car..

OK. This issues you point out above are beyond my skill level to offer advice on. I am sure these issues will spark something in some of the other, more experienced folks who might be able to comment on these further.

I used the cleaner wax first.. Then the NXT.. Car is super super shiny.. My mailman was blown away when I told my car was 15 years old>>When I park at a store, my lil' 6 gets noticed..
Considering you are just getting back into this and you did not do a lot of research before applying the wax. I think you made a good decision by at least applying the cleaner wax then topping with the NXT. I think at this point you are fine for the moment and can spend a little time doing some research and gaining some familiarity with what some of the products can do for you.

But I wonder what more can I do??
Well, there are numerous directions you can take but we need to at least get some basic stuff outta the way first so you can make your own decisions.

Does meguiars make anything else I can use??
Do I need to?? I noticed a paint cleaner that had a number 1 on it..Where is the number 2 or 3?? What are they.. I want my car to look as well as I can get it..
Well, Meguiar's makes a whole lot of products you can use. First off check out the following thread. This will familiarize you with what Meguiar's recommends as a great strategy to use to take care of your finish.

    Meguiar's 5-Step Paint Care Cycle

    Step 1 Wash

    Step 2 Clean

    Step 3 Polish

    Step 4 Protect

    Step 5 Maintain

As far as the cleaner with the Number on it I think you are likely referring the Deep Crystal Step 1. You'll find that as well as several other products I think you should familiarize yourself with in the following link:

Suggested Products for Taking Care of a New Car

But being as I just used the NXT wax, should I just stay with that?? I'll start all over again if I have to..
Being that it is still early in the year. My advice would be to do a little research into the 5-Step plan above and proceed with that. If it were closer to winter I would say hold tight and wait until Spring but since you have some great months ahead to play with I would strongly advise you taking a step forward and starting from scratch with the 5 step plan above.

Now, as you check out some of 2 threads above, I think you will find that most comments are oriented toward hand application. That's great and many people get by just fine with that. "BUT" since you are just getting serious and have not spent alot of money on products as yet. Check out the following links which will give you a look at using the G-100 Polisher as well as some of the great products in Meguiar's Professional line.

Recommended Products - G100a Dual Action Polisher

Using the G-100 to remove swirls with the Professional Line

And with this NXT wax, how many times should I re-apply it?? once a month during the summer.. I live on an island with a beach in New Jersey, so I have a lot of sun and salt air.. I willl wash her at least 1-2 times a week..
Once a month will probably do you just fine. You can do it more often if you chose with no negative impacts. I have no problem applying it weekly but I use the g-100 so it's easy for me. What you may wish to do is use the Spray Wax Booster in between your normal wax applications.

How to Get Great Results Using Meguiar's Spray Waxes

    thanx..

and one of the reasons I will only buy meguiars is because I love Barry's show on speed channel and he seems like such a nice guy I want to give him my buisness..Someone like that I know would only sell the best stuff, I didn't even bother lookin at the other brands.. But Ive known of his products since I was a car geek kid from the 70's and 80's LOL>>>
For me. I find I look at a lot of finsihes since I got into this as my main hobby. When I see a finish that I think someone has done a great job with I usually try to ask what they use. More often than not it's Meguiar's.

I hope the above info will get you started. You will have more questions. But my advice for now, including the above links. Would be for you to focus on proper wash methods and proper Quick Detailing methods which are briefly touched on in the above links and more information can be found in the forum. The reason I recommend this is because right now you have a fresh coat of wax applied. 2 as a matter of fact. Focus on properly maintaining this without causing yourself any more harm than needed. Consider this your practice coat of wax. Be sure you gain a good grasp of maintaning a finish now. At the same time. research the heck out of the 5-Step Plan and decide whether you wish to proceed by hand of by the G-100. Once you have a good grasp of the plan and how you wish to work it. Then buy the products you will need to support this and run with it. In the meantime you will have been working on proper maintenance methods so that when you do start the 5-Step plan you will alreay have some confidence that you know how to take care of all the work you will put into the finish.

      thanx Jeff,
      appreciate the thoughts..
Your right I should have researched it first..

But I was too excited!! I wanted to do something right now.. Im sure you can relate..

And I like doing everything by hand..Im not comfortable using a buffer.. I like the "old fashioned way".. Im old school I quess..

But I'll check out the threads you gave me.
      They looked good..

And I tend to be pretty loyal to one brand when I like their products.. If Im happy with it, why should I try someone else's espically when my beand comes out with a new one?? I have been using nothing but speed stick since I was 13!! (Im 37 now LOL LOL) If I like two of their products a lot, then it makes sense to me that their other stuff will be just as good.. So I know I wont be wasting my money hoping the other brand does what it says it does.. I know meguairs doesn't make anything crappy, so I never have to worry when I buy their best stuff.. I know its gonna be awesome and as good as if not better than the other guys..

And I appreciate all that Barry Meguiar does for the car hobby, he has a real passion for it and promotes it and well. And I really enjoy his show and how nice and friendly he treats people so at least I can buy his products and support his company because I know that isn't why he does what he does.. He isn't sekf promoting his stuff.. Thats very unselfish.. I like that.. He'll always get my money and my buisness.. OK enough life lesson.. Back to red car..

      thanx again Jeff..

Here are some links you may like, with going from pinkish to red paint.

        Dad's Pink Miata

        Mazda 323

The cleaner in the cleaner/wax is actualy very mild compared to others. If you like the one step products, you may want to try some ColorX followed by Nxt, or if you want to do the full process by hand, you could use the DC#1, DC#2, then 2 coats of Nxt.

And next time you start over, definately look into claying your car.

Just a couple options to confuse you with...

OK, I bought DC # 1 and 2.. and gold class car wash and condtioner.. and a nice soft spongy cloth thingy...to go with my NXT wax..

Im doing it all by hand hopefully no later than sunday... I'll post back my results..

            thanx again bro<<<

Don't forget to look into claying it buddy. Now would be a great time for you to do this. It's very easy and your end result will be much more satisfying.
