  • Marring caused by Scratch X?

This is partially my own fault but it might be Meguiar's fault too. I have an old tube of Scratch X that I bought about a year ago. I've had no reason to use it until now. Because I never use the stuff I didn't pay much attention to the forum threads on Scratch X.

I wanted to remove some minor marring in a couple of places and I didn't want to get out my pc and #80. While I was at it I applied Scratch X to the whole hood. (An OCD thing. ) A major mistake.

I followed the directions on the tube too the "T" including "let the product dry before removing excess with a separate 100 % cotton, terry cloth towel. (I used a microfiber polishing cloth). Well let me tell you, it was a son-of-a-gun to get off. I had to use a QD. I then applied Color X to the hood. Tonight I noticed that my whole darn hood is pretty well marred. Much worse than when I started.

After checking information about Scratch X on the forum, I see that Meguiar's made a mistake in labeling the tubes when Scratch X first came out.

I guess that I'll have to get out my PC and go to it with #80. I just hope that I still have sufficient clearcoat on the hood. I've previously had some water spotting that took a major effort to remove.

Sorry for the rant. I'm just a tad bit PO'd.

I also had some marring on my hood after applying ScratchX by hand. I now use #80 applied with a G104 cordless orbital buffer and I'm getting spectacular results. I usually top it off with either #21 or ColorX (my favorite cleaner wax). Supposedly ScratchX will be reformulated so that it can be applied by machine. Perhaps I'll try it then. As for my old tube, it went right in the garbage.

Don't worry, if your clear coat was thick enough before hand, ScratchX by hand and #80 by DA won't reduce it significantly.

I've found ScratchX to work quite effectively when used with the appropriate applicator. I've used just about everything as I've learned how to properly care for paint over the last two years.

Things that will cause marring with Scratch X:
        - anything that is even slightly soiled
        - cheap terry cloth towels- not soft enough!
        - cheap microfibers
        - possibly letting it dry?
        - not breaking down the diminishing abrasives, though I haven't experienced this yet

Meguiars foam applicators have given me the best results, and when I need a little more "bite" with a deeper scratch, a Meguiars terry cloth or cloth applicator.

I used to use cheap terry cloths with scratch x on a firebird I used to own and it really marred it bad, though #80 would've fixed it in a jiffy. (or properly applied scratchx!

Hang in there and don't give up on scratch x! I have the "old" formula and I haven't had problems with it when applied properly, even when viewed in the sun or under a halogen.

          Hi Tom,

We're sorry to hear of this mishap, we know you've been a huge fan and user of Meguiar's products for years and you've always been a helpful and supportive member of this forum ever since we brought it up. You joined our forum on Feb 20th, 2004 which was less than one month after we opened for business.

We have made the corrections to the label to direct people to remove ScratchX after having worked it into the finish without allowing the product to dry first. While this doesn't do anything to correct the problems you've encountered, I'm confident you'll be able to restore the finish to how it was using the dual action polisher.

For your time and trouble however, send me your shipping address and size of shirt you where and I'll send you a black Meguiar's Polo shirt.

                Thanks, Mike.

I'll send you my address and shirt size.

After reading dnorakers post, I think that my problem was either letting the product dry or using a cotton foam applicator pad other than Meguiars. I should have stuck to a foam applicator. From now on I'll use #80 and a pc for the big stuff and ScratchX for the little stuff. Live and learn.

I'm just back from a turkey hunting trip in the western part of the state (Nebraska). No turkey this trip but my truck is so dirty no one will ever notice the micromarring.

When is the new Scratch-X coming out? Or is it already out?

                    x2....

BTW, I returned two bottles of Scratch X on two separate occasions over the years after being DIS-Satisfied with the results. HOWEVER, after visiting these forums, and following the techniques contained within, I have TWO bottles of Scratch X in stock and believe in this product 1000%. Can't wait for the reformulated stuff.

It's not out yet. There was a misprint in our latest Consumer catalog that listed it as the changed formula but this was incorrect.

When the new formula is approved and it becomes available and begins shipping we will announce it here.
