What is the two buckett method of washing a car?

  • #2
    Hi G6 GTP,

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

The two bucket method is where you have two buckets, one with your soap solution the other with plain water. The idea being is that after you wash a panel or section of your car, you rinse your mitt off in the fresh water bucket before dipping it into the soap water bucket to gather more soap solution.

The goal is to remove some of or all off, or most of the dirt and grime from your wash mitt into the fresh water bucket to keep from contaminating your soap water solution and to hopefully prevent scratching your paint by preventing you from merely transferring dirt from one panel to the another panel.

To use this system you'll find you also have to kind of wring-out the water from your mitt after dipping it into the fresh water solution or it will be so full of water that it makes it hard to gather up fresh soap water solution.

The two-bucket method is a good option for cars with nice finishes in which you want to do everything you can to prevent from instilling scratches into the finish.

    Hope this helps...

Here's some shots I took before I washed a car using the two-bucket method.

      Tools and soap.

      Grit Guard in each bucket

Soap solution in one bucket, water will go in the other bucket.

Where do you get the 'grit gards'

          Do local stores have them?

          Thanks!

A local store might, but you would have to get pretty lucky.

You are better off ordering online/by phone, either from gritguard.com, meguiars.com, or autodetailingsolutions.com.

              Hi redrover,

              Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

Grit Guards can be hard to find on retail shelves, you can order one through Meguiar's through our E-store or by calling Customer Care at 1-800-347-5700

Sorry if this is a newbie question...but I usually just hose off my wash cloth before I put it back in the soapy bucket. The water usually comes out about as clean as when I started.

Would the 2 bucket method be more effective than just hosing off the MF towel/Wash Mitt??

If you hosed and rinsed out good, then it should be about the same effect. Maybe more water used though.

Test it yourself: spray the wash media with the hose and then, in addition, rinse it (with agitation) in a rinse bucket. At the end of the wash the water in the rinse bucket outgha be perfectly clean if the spraying is sufficient.

IMO immersing the mitt/wash media in a bucket of water and really squeezing/kneading/agitating it will be more effective than merely spraying it with a hose. Just spraying might force some dirt further *into* the wash media instead of forcing it *out* of it.

For mitts, IMO combining backflushing (putting the hose inside the mitt and rinsing it out that way) and the 2 bucket/immersion method would be best, but it might not be worth the trouble to some people.

Heh heh, maybe she'll change her tune if you keep *her* car looking like new. My wife's become almost as fanatical about her car's appearance as I am.

Mine too. Especially after we bought her a new car that she likes to show off.
