#83, PC 7424 and W-8006

Input and opinions please.
I am using the following:

PC with a 6 1/2 Backing plate
W-8006 Polishing pad
Speed of 5
with #83 DACP

I am using slow arm speed, but still see some minor scratches and imperfections. Not to mention, I think I am applying more marring of my finish then the removal of swirls and scratches. I have Mike's DVD on order, but am not sure I am doing this correctly. I worked for about 2 hours on my LR 1/4 panel using some Scratch X too and the results were good, but I must be doing something wrong because 2 hours per panel seems a little long. Here is the best pic I can provide. Lighting sux and have yet to master the skill of photographing imperfections. ANY help would be apprechiated

You might be working the #83 too long. If you work #83 until it is dry then you will cause micro marring.

Also, how often are you cleaning your pad. A clean pad is easier to work with and if you get too much build up that can cause some problems.

Getting Mikes DVD is an excellent idea and you will learn a tremendous amount by watching it. It's one thing to be told how to do something.....much better to see it.

Yup, that is it. I am working it until it dries.
I rinse the pad thoroughly after each use, so it is clean. Can I redo the door without letting it dry to remove the marring? Or do I need a different step now?

Mike has a DVD? Which one is that? I was aware of the VHS tape?

You should be able to stick with the #83 to clean up any marring that was caused by going too long. Remember, the deepest scratches might not be 100% removed with just a PC, but you should be able to get most, if not all of it cleaned up.

ScratchX will take a while, nothing wrong with hours with that product.

Yeah, on some of the deeper scratches the Scratch x removed them very well or minimized them very well. The downside, it took forever and a lot of elbow grease. I will go work the #83 again, not let it dry and continue on. Oh, BTW, Mike's DVD is available here:

You said that you rinse the pad. Are you actually washing the pad? I have found a couple of ways to clean the pad.

If you have a rotary then you can put the pad on it and hold a terry cloth towel on it as it spins. I assume you do not have a rotary....so take a terry cloth towel and hold it firmly against the pad and then turn on the PC. That will transfer product to the pad and clean it. If your pad just gets too loaded, use a new pad.

As far as next steps.....using #83 will work fine. Work a section about 2 ft x 2 ft and then wipe off the #83 with a microfiber towel and move to the next section. Overlap sections as you go. In general, you should clean the pad as you complete each panel. Like when you finish a fender, clean the pad before moving on to the door.

Thanks again for the tips. I am rinsing the pad with my garden hose, ring it out, rinse again then put it on the pc and spin it to dry it out. I do this when I am done with the waxing, not after each panel. Guess I need some more pads.

While washing pads is NOT recommended by Meguiar's, I like to clean my pads this way. It's easy, uses minimal water, and fast. Especially if you dry them with a rotary.

If they don't recommend washing pads, what do they want you to do? Use them once then throw them away?

You can clean them with a terry towel as I listed in an earlier post. The next time you use the pad just tap it a few times to make sure any dried material gets removed.

You should only be using one product on a pad. For example, you would need one pad for #83 and another pad if you are applying NXT with the PC and yet another pad if you are using #80. Get the idea!

The pads should last quite awhile, especially if you are just doing your own cars.

It's a little investment up front but pays big dividends in the apprearance of your car.

I am very frustrated at not getting anything close to what I had expected with the PC from the pictures posted. My issues are far less severe. I am certain it is me, but I am frustrated nonetheless.

That is why I am rinsing the pad after each product. I was making sure they were/are clean before I move to #80. I have the finishing pad which is dedicated to the #21. I am going to order another polishing pad anyways, just didn't have two right now.

It is single stage paint, but the techniques are the same. This is a great video for someone who is just starting out and wants to learn the proper technique for using the tools and products that are available. I have this video and would strongly recommend it.

You will see the proper way to use the PC and that is a lot easier than just getting told what to do.
