  • 1992 Mazda MX-6

My cousin recently bought a red 1992 Mazda MX-6 coupe for his son. Needless to say, the previous owner never took care of it. The roof and trunk suffer from severe oxidation that's just a complete eyesore. Can this car be saved by Meguiar's products, or will it need a new paint job?

EDIT: Oh, so this is what's called clearcoat failure. Guess my cousin will need to spend more $$$ than he expected.

I was afraid that would be the answer. It seems that the MX-6 is already a lost cause on its own. It already failed a couple of smog tests. Hell, I'm not sure if I should even bother detailing it, given the water-resistant cobwebs in the engine bay.

The interior looks worn, but I think it can be saved with NXT Tech Protect and some Rich Leather Wipes (and a long vacuum job before that).

Agreed about the roof. But all the other parts of the finish seem to be in good order from what we can see in the pics shown.

You will first want to "clean" the finish. Use a high quality wash product like Meguiar's Gold Class car wash, then clay the finish with a product like Meguiar's Smooth Surface clay kit. Following that, you will need to use a chemical/dimishing abraisive cleaner/polish.

These products (the cleaners, cleaner/polishes) come in a variety of flavors:

        For hand:
Use ScratchX. There's instructions on its use all over this forum.

        By machine:
Use Meguiar's #83 and #80 cleaner/polishes with w8006 pads. Again, there are instructions for their use all over this forum.

For the headlights, you can use PlasticX to restore clarity.

All three of the things listed above need to be *worked in* to achieve any result.

After that, top it off with a high quality Meguiar's wax and you should have a nice finish (excluding the roof!).

You could always make it a convertible

That doesn't look like its just clearcoat failure, it looks like the paint underneath has toasted too and nothing short taking it back to bare metal etc etc will help there.

The interior looks ok to me, as you said leather wipes and protectant. Surprisingly the wheels look to be in good shape. With that much wear on the paint I'd have expected them to be covered in brake dust.

Well, I told my cousin that the MX-6 will need a new paint job. He said he's not gonna worry about it, as his son will do whatever he wants with it.

It's a shame that a nice car like that was neglected for years. Worse is that my nephew will probably put it in a worse condition as soon as he gets his driver's license.
