  • Newly Repainted told not to get the paint wet for a week?

I've got a concern about this. The bonnet was just repainted and the body shop said don't get water on the car the water spots won't come out, ever heard of this? They said to leave the car garaged for a week??????

I wouldnt say you can't get it wet for a week.

they are just concerned that any acid in the rain could cause deeper etching than normal. especially if you live in an Industrial area.

I would say if it does get rained on or water spots, give it a good wash using high quality, but 1/2 strength car wash soap and dry it with a quality microfiber.

This is good advice just because you should treat new paint carefully, not that you shouldn't get it wet. It's just good general advice.

Remember, in a body shop environment, they often use all kinds of chemicals on fresh paint, we even make these chemicals ourselves, they're typically compounds, paint cleaners, cleaner/polishes and pure polishes, so don't think you can't apply products to fresh paint or get it wet, you certainly can, you just want to be careful with it.

For example, you don't want to leave a car with fresh paint outside to be rained on and then have the rain drops dry on the paint and potentially leave water spots or water etchings in the paint, but this holds true for any paint, not just fresh paint.

      Does this make sense?

Paint Needs to Breathe (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3704) Words mean things, just ask any Lawyer. Floating around on the Internet, and discussed for decades among car enthusiasts is the myth that paint needs to breathe. Or is it a myth? It depends on how literal you read into the words.

The local water in SoCal is usually worse than the rain. Most local water supplies have pretty high mineral content so getting hit by sprinklers will leave bad spotting if it doesn’t get cleaned off before drying.

Here’s a thread on water spots.
