Haven't seen you post in a while chevyman, anyway.
Here is the problem I see with using this as a wash sponge, the pile isn't very deep so you could trap sand/grit between the paint and the sponge. Unlike a deeper pile sponge/wash mitt that tends to pull the grit up into the mitt away from the paint.
Where when you QD with the Quick Detal Pad, you are using it with very light dust with no larger grit type things.
My father was using a detail sponge as a wash sponge but I made him toss it and buy a deeper pile mitt for washing. Just my .02.
I haven't posted for awhile. Been posting on a sport website. I know that it not has good has a sponge, but it does a good job. I only used it because I haven't got out to the auto shop to get a sponge.
I respectfully disagree with gb387 on this one. My friend has been using one of these when we wash her car for about the last 6 months, and we haven't had any problems with micromarring, etc. It seems to hold about an ideal amount of wash solution (not too much, not too little), and is the right size for her (small) hands. The pile is not the deepest, but, hey, this thing was designed for QD'ing, so I'd hope it would be effective at pulling dirt away from the surface.
Best thing about these was getting them at half price on clearance at Advance Auto or almost half price at ADS.
