  • #66 green???

I've been buying the gallons of #66 Quick Detailer for years now. It's always been pinkish purple. Today, I opened a new bottle up, and it's light green. Did Meguiars change colors, or do I have a mis-labeled bottle? The green stuff has about the right consistency, and I don't see any abrasives in it.

I used it anyway, and it seems to do the job about right. However, it does not haze up. It remains fairly wet and sticky. And if it's not #66, WHAT IS IT???
    Perfection isn't good enough.

They did a reformulation. I have some left of the old version, but if i remember correctly the new version is supposed to be thicker to make application easier.

M66 had been a lavender/purple for as long as I had used it.

The color is slightly less bright than the M21 Sealant, if you have any of that.

            Hey,

Yes the new #66, for about the last few years has been a light green color. It is a fantastic product especially when used with a rotary buffer!

Were there many changes besides viscosity from pink/purple to the green?

Will it not leave buffer swirls behind when used with a rotary? I just purchased a gallon of it and am looking to test it out. Is it meant to be used primarily with the rotary? From what I've been told 66 is almost identical to ColorX. Is this true?

                  Hey,

I do not know how many changes have been made. But as far as I know, the ones that have been made, have been for the better!

                    Hey,

It depends on how much experience the rotary user has. Now with that said, I have used a rotary for close to 17 years and I still get the odd buffer mark! Many would suggest following the rotary with a PC and #66 to remove any buffer marks. One of my fast and favorite combos is #66 followed by #20! The look is awesome!!!

No, Meguiar's #66 is not almost identical to ColorX. In fact, it is quite different. Meg's #66 is more aggressive and is formulated for use with a rotary buffer as well as hand, DA, or orbital. But I have found that to get the most out of its diminishing abrasives, the rotary does work best. But for decent swirl removal and deep gloss, the #66 and PC works just fine!

ColorX is a cleaner/polish/polymer that is less aggressive and can not be used with the rotary.

So while I like ColorX, I still prefer #66 if I doing a fast detail.

                        green vs purple #66

Well, that's all great info guys thanks. I do like the consistency change! The pink stuff would sling with the rotary and foam pad unless you were extremely careful. It's definitely a 'wear a bib' wax! Having a thicker consistency seems to have cut that down some. However, I was not so happy with the fact that it doesn't haze up like it used to. It was a little cold and windy that day, but still seemed to take too long to haze. It never really did in fact. Just kind of stayed sticky and was tough to remove by hand with a microfiber towel.

It does seem to me that it has perhaps gone down in abrasives over time, but I can't say that it reduced enough to be problematic yet. It still does the job. And it never took out rough stuff in the first place. It's worthless for scratches etc, but priceless for removing stuff stuck on to the paint, such as black marks, paint from other car sideswipes, and the like. I like that, because you know you can take off what don't belong there, and you can't really screw up and chew on the paint. Only in rare circumstances with extreme pressure (and intent) have I been able to rub a corner off with it. It's about as safe as you can get, especially with an orbital. With a rotary such as my Dewalt, it'll swirl every time. Easily remedied however, by simply going back over it with an orbital and more #66. I buy it by the gallon, so the color change may very well have been some time back. But definitely not 5 years here. Of course, the detail supply place I bought it from might have had it a while. The bottles never looked that old though.

I wonder, what's different from the pink stuff, other than the consistency and color? Did they change the chemicals/abrasives any??
