  • #7 continued + soap question

Mike requested that I stop hijacking threads and start my own, so here we go!

I was asking the merits of using #7 before #20 then #26. The question was then of the condition of the paint. This link should take you to several pictures: http://www.auta.com/Vehicles/Details.cfm?VID=51983
The paint looks pretty good to me, so I don't think it needs any cleaner (or very little at the least), but I am open to feedback.

I should get the car around mid-March. It rains quite a bit here, but I shouldn't have trouble getting some sunny days. In the meantime I want to have my supplies and game plan ready to go for when I get it!

I read the poll about which soaps everyone uses, but am still unsure of which to use myself. I don't care about suds, but want something gentle and nourishing for the paint. Any suggestions?

    Thanks again everyone! Shine well!

The most gentle soap is going to be Gold Class Wash.

DC#1 is the mildest cleaner to use.

Hard to say for sure from those pics. Kind of zoomed out and the leaves make it hard to tell. I would guess that it could use a mild cleaner at least, but thats just me.

With a dark color like that, using #7 should show. Then those 2 waxes would be great.

      What a nice F-body!

You'll know for sure about the condition of the paint when you get it. Off hand, I'd bet it could use at least some #9 and probably even #80. That's not a slam at its condition, just the voice of experience; no dark car is *ever* as nice as a buyer would like

The #7? issue will, IMO, depend on what it was repainted with.

I bet it was repainted with basecoat/clear. Try to find out (though it'll be easy to tell once you get it). If so, I don't know if I'd use the #7. In my experience, #7 doesn't do all *that* much for like-new b/c. If (big "if") it was redone in single stage (which it originally had) then I *would* use the #7. I used it on cars like that when they were new and it worked great.

I wouldn't expect any shampoo to "nourish" the paint. IMO b/c paints don't need that sort of thing the way old-school lacquers do. Rather, they just need to be well maintained. Even if it is single stage, I'd choose between #00 (very mild, for when it's not too dirty) and #62 (normal washes). I prefer these "pro line" shampoos, they seem to help keep the wash-induced marring down. Both are easy on your LSP.

        First off...

        Cool car!

Second, go with the Gold Class in our Consumer Line, it's our top shelf car wash as it makes the paint very slippery when you're washing, probably the most important feature of a good car wash.
(I still use NXT Car Wash because I like lots of suds)

Then because this car is you passion, go ahead and after washing, check for bonded contaminants, you never know if they are there until you feel the paint and even if you don't feel anything you'd be amazed at what I've pulled off paint that feels smooth to start with.

Then use a paint cleaner, if you pull the car into the sun after washing at it looks swirl free, then you could skip this step but if it were mine, I would want to use a paint cleaner just to insure you're starting off with a for-sure, known clean base.

        Then polish and wax.

          Hey,

Just to add to what has been said already....

The most gentle soap from Meguiar's is actually the #00 Hi Tech Wash.

          #00 Hi-Tech Wash

From the consumer line, I too would go with the Gold Class though my personal preference goes to the #62 Carwash Shampoo and Conditioner (Professional Series) or the Shampoo Plus from the Detailer Series.

          Carwash Shampoo & Conditioner

          Shampoo Plus

          Cheers!

            Thanks again everyone!

If it needs something a little stronger than #7, I was thinking #9, but I can't find it on the main site (?). Can someone link me or tell me what it is under?

            Thanks!

Well, #7 is a pure polish.

              I think #9 is under cleaner/polish.

                Hey,

Meguiar's #7 Show Car Glaze is a pure polish with no intended ingredients for cleaning.

Meguiar's #9 Swirl Remover is a very mild cleaner/polish. It will remove very light marring but tends to work best with the rotary polisher if swirl removal is on the agenda.

For swirl removal with a PC, I would suggest starting off with #80 Speed Glaze.

                #9 Swirl Remover

                #9 Swirl Remover 2.0

                #80 Speed Glaze

                #80 Speed Glaze

By hand, you would be better to use ScratchX or ColorX.

                ScratchX

                ColorX
