  • removing decals-july 2005 popular mechanics

i was just looking through the auto clinic of the 2005 issue of popular mechanics (pg 119)

it said that the easyest way to remove a decal besides using 3m stripe remover or goo gone would be to clean area with the decal then spray the area with house hold amaonia and then cover it with food service wrap or plastic trash bag wait 10mins then add fresh amonia

Q: won't this strip the clear coat?

never had to try anything because that would be the last day of my life when I would put a decal or sticker of some sort onto the paint of my vehicle. Now as far as those dealer decals and emblems go I have always just used a hair dryer to remove them and then clean up the remainder of the mess with some QD. I have had no problems with this method. I just don't like applying chemicals to my paint other than things that are made for it.

The window is a different story and I could easily apply a sticker or two there because that is much easier to take off later down the road. I just use a razor blade for stickers on the window, just be careful not to mark the glass when you are trying to take the decal off from not angling the blade enough and you end up scoring the glass.

For the stickers that the dealer applied, I just used my fingernails and was careful not to touch my nail to the paint. Came off fine. Just worked away the remaining goo with Speed Detailer and a microfiber cloth.

Also, plastic razorblades work. It is what I will be using to remove the decals off the back of my mom's camry in a soon-to-be detail.

just use a hair dryer to soften the adhesive in one corner of the decal and pull the rest off cold. this minimizes excess adhesive from staying on the surface.

I usually soften the remaining residue with adhesive removal purchased through auto trim express or any other graphic supplier then wipe with a terry cloth.

I just removed the vinyl lettering from my service van because i ordered new lettering.

Nice Find! Here's a more vinylmayhem.com/store/AddCart.asp?ProdID=%7BB5C7CB57%2DB90C%2D4F91%2D8208%2D391DBE00B034%7D]specific link [edited for commercial link; 2hotford]

Act quick, b/4 somebody in Irvine busts them

The ammonia/food wrap technique is quite common amongst window tinters. It softens the remaining adhesive AFTER you've removed the tint or vinyl graphic.

                          the Meg's sticker...does it say 'since 1901'?
                          just wondering.
                          thanks for the link.
I might order some other stickers while at it.
