if i used the cleaner wax for a base coat, and then use the nxt or the gold class liguid wax. how much more does the cleaner wax do for the paint.

This is a popular and effective way to clean and wax your car's paint, use the cleaner/wax as your paint cleaner and leave some protection, add a second coat of NXT or something else for more wax protection.

Common and popular combination is,

A12 followed by NXT
ColorX followed by NXT

While the below car is an old car it has a modern basecoat/clearcoat finish on it. All work was done by hand by yours truly.

Here's what ColorX did by hand to a 1947 Plymouth Coupe,

Before - Horrible Swirls throughout the finish








First we removed the white paint overspray using Meguiar's Quik Clay System now replaced with Smooth Surface Clay Kit.



Then applied one hand application of ColorX followed by one hand application of NXT Tech Wax Liquid

Wow Mike that is amazing. The swirls on my Mustang aren't nearly that bad, but I've tried using Scratch X to remove them only to no avail. Should I go pick up some Color X and try it? Any tips on what you used to apply, exactly how you applied it, how long you let it set/dry, and how you removed it... would be great. Thanks in advance, that's an amazing transformation for hand-applied products.

Also, would using a coat of polish in between the Color X and the wax yield an even better shine?

ScratchX would be the stronger cleaner, so for swirls, that should be the way to go by hand.

As far as a polish in between, ehhh.... it could be done, but you would likely be removing some/most/all of the first coat of wax. Since Meguiars recomends two coats of wax, you would be doing this:

1. Wash
2. Clay
3. ColorX (clean-->polish-->wax)
4. Polish
5. Wax
6. Wax

If you are going to do that, you may as well have just used a dedicated cleaner. Plus you can kind of see how you are repeating yourself. At least in my opinion, if you arent going to be cutting out steps/saving time, there is no need for a cleaner/wax.

You would be creating a extra step in your process. I would go cleaner/wax then the nxt. Good luck.
