I have not used either of the two mentioned but I have used the Porter Cable Rotary and its a very nice buffer might be another to think about.
Looks like the Makita has a 10amp motor and Pre-set speed setting dial from 600-3,000 RPM and the Dewalt only an 8amp motor and Pre-set speed setting dial from 1,000-3,000 RPM. Makita looks like it might be a couple steps up on the Dewalt.

My Makita buffer and Avatar story...

Here's what the head looked of the buffer looked like before. It has a rough texture because the aluminum was cast in a sand mold

The bearings in my howel and grind when you turn it on, so it's going in to Makita to be rebuild. They don't make this configuration any longer. The new ones have a lager head, and it's poweder coated smooth, (I think).
Also note the rubber block on the back of the buffer in the third picture. I don't see these anymore either. If you look closely, you can see some yellow residue around the head of the buffer from buffing out the yellow Milk Truck.

Hey,
I own two different models of Makita rotaries as well as the Dewalt 849 rotary. They are all great machines though I will reach for my Makitas a little more often!!

You guys should try the Festool. This is the most common machine in Europe. But as I can see not so common in the U.S
I have the old and trusty B&D 6193? with electronic speed control. It has been with me through thick and thin. I guess I should have clicked the Dewalt button eh?

I plan to order a Makita within the next couple of days. I have looked at both, but for some reason I've decided on the Makita instead of the DeWalt.
