  • Questions about #7 Glaze and GC Wax

I currently use the Show Car Glaze #7 and the new Gold Class Wax on my '01 truck which is black. It is my understanding that the Gold Class Wax is a polish and a wax, is this correct?

Is it beneficial to use both these products on my truck?

If so should I wait any amount of time after using the Glaze before applying the wax?

Is there any special technique for using the Gold Class wax or just apply it like any ordinary wax?

Last question, I have been told that using an orbital buffer or circular motions when polishing and waxing will cause swirl marks and that a back and forth motion when applying polish and wax is better, is this true?

Sorry for all the questions but I figure I might as well get it right the first time.

    Thanks

Yes, Gold Class Wax is a polish/wax, here's some information on Meguiar's waxes.

What are the differences between Meguiar's waxes?

Here at Meguiar's we are often asked why we have so many products? A variation of this question is, "Why does Meguiar's have so many waxes?"

    Here's the answer:

Over the years, we have developed some very unique and highly specialized waxes that have attained their own following of loyal fans. All of the waxes Meguiar's manufactures are exclusive formulas, each offering the end-user its own unique features and benefits.

Two people with identical cars with the identical color and type of paint may prefer different Meguiar's waxes according to… what looks good in their eyes.

    Who are we to argue?

What's more important is that you, our valued customer, know that whichever Meguiar's wax you choose, you can rest assured that you're getting the very best wax money can buy, not only in appearance results but also in protection results.

For that reason, it can be hard to recommend a specific wax because we're all individuals. Typically, we can share information about each of our waxes, and then let you use the product and make up your own mind.

If you're not 100% completely satisfied with any Meguiar's product, just return the unused portion to Meguiar's along with your receipt and we will gladly refund you money.

Sometimes, it's just a matter of experimenting with our different waxes to find just the right one that best suits your particular set of circumstances as well as your personal tastes. Some things to consider when choosing a wax are the environmental conditions in your area and the amount of time you are willing to invest in waxing each year.

All new cars, trucks, and S.U.V.'s require a non-abrasive wax that is safe for clear coat paints. All Meguiar's waxes are non-abrasive, this means Meguiar's waxes contain no ingredients that will abrade the paint or instill a scratch.

You can safely use any Meguiar's wax on any new car's finish and easily produce excellent results. That said, some Meguiar's waxes are more suited for a finish that is new and in excellent condition, while some Meguiar's waxes offer a light chemical cleaner for finishes in less than perfect condition.

A finish in new or excellent condition would benefit more from a Meguiar's polish/wax or pure wax because they don't contain any chemical cleaners and instead offer a more concentrated blend of polishing oils and protection ingredients.

A finish that has been neglected, or is a few years old, would benefit more from a Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax because the non-abrasive chemical cleaners will safely and effectively clean the surface by removing contaminants producing a more clear and glossy finish. Remember, your end results are always determined by the condition of the surface to start with, and the prep work you do before applying a protective coating. If your finish is severely neglected, you might consider using a dedicated paint cleaner before applying any wax.

Here is list of all Meguiar's waxes and the unique characteristics each wax offers.

Pure Waxes – Pure waxes are an excellent choice for new cars, trucks, S.U.V.s, new paint jobs, cars that have been well maintained, or cars whose finish has recently been professionally detailed.

Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Wax – This pure synthetic paint protectant will do more to increase optical clarity, shine and gloss, while providing the best protection against attack than any other wax on other market.

M-26 Hi Tech Yellow Wax – This pure wax blends the highest quality Brazilian Number One Carnauba Wax with costly Polymers, Silicones, and special Resins to create eye dazzling gloss and depth of color while providing durable paint protection.

Deep Crystal System Carnauba Wax – This premium quality liquid wax blends Brazilian Number One Carnauba Wax with an exotic blend of conditioning oils, as well as long lasting Polymers, Silicones and Resins for long lasting durability. Step-3 Carnauba wax leaves behind a brilliant, crystal clear finish with incredible water beading action.

M-16 Professional Paste Wax – This is a traditional paste wax for people who enjoy the aesthetics of applying a paste wax by hand on a leisurely Saturday afternoon. Introduced in 1951 and virtually unchanged since then, this is the first automotive wax Meguiar's introduced to their Mirror Glaze line. #16 is formulated to provide long lasting durable protection under extreme environmental conditions under hot temperatures. #16 dries fast, dries clear, and will not turn white on pebble textured black plastic trim.

    Polish/Waxes

Gold Class Clear Coat Car Wax – This wax comes in both liquid and paste versions and is an excellent product for any new car finish. This is what Meguiar's calls a Polish/Wax. This means it is part rich conditioning oils that add beauty and part synthetic polymers that add protection. This wax is famous for creating deep, dark, crystal clear reflections on any type of paint. Polish/Waxes are excellent waxes for people who love a deep, dark reflective shine, but who also want superior protection for their car's finish. Gold Class Clear Coat wax accomplishes both of the goals using one of Meguiar's most complex formula's of their legendary trade secret polishing oils and the best protecting polymers available.

Medallion Premium Paint Protection – Medallion Premium Paint Protection will restore your finish-especially dark colors-to a deep, full-spectrum shine. The exclusive Meguiar's MiraBenz™ bonding system uses positively charged molecules to "lock" the finish to the surface, making it almost impervious to daily assaults. Its balanced blend of nutrients and conditioners combines with superior waxes to provide brilliant performance. Medallion Premium Paint Protection's exclusive bonding system provides long lasting protection.

    Cleaner/Waxes

ColorX - ColorX is Meguiar's newest addition to the Cleaner/Wax family. ColorX is like Meguiar's traditional Cleaner/Wax, (A-1216), on steroids. It's more effective at cleaning neglected finishes, restoring optimum clarity and leaving behind an incredibly long lasting synthetic polymer paint protectant than Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax, (A-12), without having to resort to harsh abrasives and without giving up the kind of stellar results you have come to expect from Meguiar's products. ColorX can be applied by hand, dual-action polisher and orbital buffers.

Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax – This is Meguiar's best all purpose cleaner wax. A-12 as it's known by it's part name, was introduced in 1973. While most waxes come and go… this wax has been around for over 30 years and will be around as long as were driving cars. Meguiar's Cleaner Wax is a combination of non-abrasive chemical cleaners, rich conditioning oils and synthetic polymers, silicones and waxes all ingredients for long lasting paint protection. Because this Cleaner/Wax is non-abrasive it can be used on finishes in good to excellent condition with excellent results. The chemical cleaners in Meguiar's cleaner wax will clean and remove light oxidation, pore-embedding stains, built-up road grime, and air-borne contaminants. The trade secret conditioning oils will rejuvenate your paint, restoring the paint's original oils lost over time, resulting in a darker, more clear finish. The synthetic polymers, waxes and silicones will seal the paint, locking in the rich conditioning oils and protect the finish against corrosion, oxidation, chemical attack, and the detrimental effect caused by day-in, day-out driving and exposure to the environment.

Another benefit to Meguiar's A-12 Cleaner Wax is it's widespread availability, and affordable price, (suggested retail is $4.95). This makes it another good choice for people with daily drivers that would like to wax their car often. And if you like to see water beading on your car's finish after washing or following a rain storm, you will not be disappointed. The chemists at Meguiar's recently reformulated A-12 Cleaner Wax to bead water like nobody's business! Water beads are small, tall and tight and last and last. Water beading, as well as darkness gets better and better with each additional coat. Easy to use, Meguiar's Cleaner Wax wipes on easy, dries fast, and removes effortlessly with a premium quality 100% cotton towel, or Meguiar's own microfiber polishing cloth, the Ultimate Wipe. Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax can be applied by hand, dual-action polisher and orbital buffers.

    #6 Mirror Glaze Cleaner/Wax
    – Meguiar's also offers a Cleaner/Wax in the Professional line, which is available in both 16-ounce bottles and 64-ounce containers. M-06 Cleaner/Wax in the Professional line is a tad bit more aggressive than any of the Cleaner/Waxes in the consumer line and perfectly suited for one-step applications on neglected surfaces. M-06 can also be used with a rotary buffer for extra cleaning and polishing strength, as well as by hand, Dual-Action polishers, and Orbital buffers. This product has widespread availability, and is a long time favorite among serious enthusiasts.

    M-6601 Quick Detailer
    – This cleaner wax is the workhorse in the Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax category. Available in 1-gallon jugs, this is Meguiar's most aggressive cleaner wax and perfectly suited for use with rotary buffers on severely neglected, oxidized, scratched and swirled surfaces. This wax offers incredible cleaning strength, without using harsh abrasives. The rich polishing oils leave behind a lustrous finish while Meguiar's state-of-the-art synthetic polymer waxes leave behind a long lasting durable protective finish. Perfect for Used Car dealers and wholesalers looking for a fast and effective one-step product. M-66 like M-06 is very versatile, and can be used by hand, dual-action polisher, orbital buffer, and the rotary buffer.

#20 Polymer Sealant – As the name implies, this is a premium polymer sealant. Unlike most products on the market labeled polymer sealant, this product works. The hardest thing to make a polymer sealant do is to bond and adhere evenly over the entire surface. Without the right technology behind the formula, polymers will tend to bond in some area, and not in others. This leaves some areas of your car's finish protected, while other areas are susceptible to damage. The chemist at Meguiar's went to great lengths to ensure that the polymers used in #20 Polymer Sealant bond evenly on all types of paint.

#20 Polymer Sealant contains a very small amount of some very light chemical paint cleaners, this helps to insure superior bonding for long lasting protection, .

A common question about car waxes is:

"How long will a wax last?"

Well, one of the most important factors that determines how long a wax lasts, is:

How well the surface is prepared to accept the wax.

That's why Meguiar's chemists include a light amount of chemical cleaners in this product. These light chemical paint cleaners help to clean and remove any light surface contamination or oxidation from the finish so that the polymers can bond or polymerize to the finish at their maximum ability. This ensures the polymer protection will last longer than had the chemical cleaners not first prepared the surface for optimal bonding. #20 Polymers Sealant is easy to apply, and incredibly easy to wipe off. It leaves a bright shine on finishes in good to excellent condition. #20 Polymer Sealant can be applied by hand, dual-action polisher and orbital buffers.

    Meguiar's Cleaner/Waxes - a great choice for daily drivers
Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax is an excellent choice for all new cars, truck and S.U.V.'s that are used as daily drivers and parked at least a portion of each day outdoors and without cover. Because daily drivers are driven daily (thus the term), and are often parked for at least part of the day, if not all the time, the finish is constantly under attack. Contaminants, dirt and road grime tend to build-up faster on daily drivers than cars that are only driven once in a while and parked under cover or in a garage for part or most of each day. The safe and gentle non-abrasive cleaning action used by Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax insures your new cars finish stays clean, clear and protected - the perfect wax for daily drivers.

Note: Although all Meguiar's Cleaner/Waxes contain chemical cleaners, you can safely use them on all finishes, new or old. The cleaning ability of Meguiar's Cleaner/Waxes is effective but gentle, and should not be confused with off-the-shelf Cleaner/Waxes that often contain strong cleaning agents, harsh solvents and in some cases, sharp abrasives.

    Spray Waxes

Meguiar's spray waxes are meant to be used as booster waxes to supplement the base coat of wax you have already applied. These two spray waxes help maintain the results your have previously achieved. They are not intended to take the place of a normal application of either a paste or a liquid wax.

NXT Generation Spray Wax – This liquid spray on wax is a companion product for Meguiar's NXT Generation of car care products built with ESP's (Engineered Synthetic Polymers) for today's advanced polymer finishes. NXT Spray Wax builds on the results you have already achieved using NXT Tech Wax. NXT Spray Wax is an excellent maintenance product to maintain your protection, in-between regular applications of NXT Tech Wax. This is not a quick detailer and should not be used to remove dirt and dust accumulation. It is also not a replacement for a regular coating of any wax. NXT Spray Wax can be used with all Meguiar's waxes, but chemically works best with NXT Spray Wax.

Meguiar's Quik Wax – This is a remarkable product. With Meguiar's Spray Wax, you can quickly restore that "just waxed" look in minutes. Recently reformulated, Quik Wax now darkens and deepens medium to dark colored paints, while significantly increasing gloss and shine. Quik Wax also helps to fill in and hide unsightly swirls and scratches. This is not a replacement for a quick detailer, but instead, the natural companion to a quick detailer. Using a quick detailer first to remove light dust and fresh contaminants, then immediately going over the finish with Quik Wax to maximize optical clarity, shine and gloss. Quik Wax can be used with all Meguiar's waxes.

Is it beneficial to use both these products on my truck?
Yes. Applying two products like a pure polish followed by a polish wax will insure your black truck is as deep, dark clear, glossy and reflective as possible. If this is what you're after then definitely use both products. Besides that, just the act of pushing smooth creamy lotion type products over your truck's paint has a polishing or smoothing effect which helps to increase gloss.

If so should I wait any amount of time after using the Glaze before applying the wax?
No. Compounds, Paint Cleaners, Cleaner/Polishes, and Pure Polishes do not need to dry and you don't need to wait for any amount of time after using them before moving on to the next step. Also, when applying pure polishes and polish/waxes and pure waxes, thin coats worked in well are much better than thick coats. Thick coats just wastes product and make removal more difficult.

Is there any special technique for using the Gold Class wax or just apply it like any ordinary wax?
Apply a thin coat and work in well, usually two to three passes over each square inch using a clean, soft foam applicator.

Last question, I have been told that using an orbital buffer or circular motions when polishing and waxing will cause swirl marks and that a back and forth motion when applying polish and wax is better, is this true?
Which forum or wax companies website and/or which self-appointed Guru did you get this from? Ahh... doesn't matter, the Internet is full of misinformation...

This is from our Information Station forum, when you have time, read some of the threads in that forum as there is a lot of helpful information contained therein.

    Circles or Straight Lines?

    • * Do you rub in straight lines?
      * Do you rub in circle motions?

In my younger (less educated) days, I would just put some wax on a pad & rub it on in a swirling motion, but now I'm wondering if that’s the best way to do it. I just want to improve my technique! Thanks everyone.
    Hi MattNO3,

Thank your for your questions. Meguiar’s official response to this question is this,

If you’re using a non-abrasive product with a high quality, clean, soft foam applicator pad, and you’re working on a clean surface, then it shouldn't’t matter which direction you move the applicator pad over the finish because nothing you’re using will be instilling any scratches or swirls into the finish.

The above being true, then some panels lend themselves better to straight line motions, while other panels lend themselves better to circular motions.

    Examples:

    Circular Motions
Most people find it’s easier to apply products in circular motions to large panels like the hood of a car. The reason for this is because circular motions act to help you spread your product out over large areas for more even, and thorough coverage. Some people also feel that circular motions help you to better work products into the finish. One thing for sure, moving your applicator pad in a circular motion tends to feel natural, and appears to come natural to most people. (Hand a wax applicator to 10 people and ask them to apply some wax to the hood of a car and stand back and watch how they apply the wax).

    Straight Line Motions
Without good technique, applying products using straight-line motions is more difficult on larger panels. Straight-line motions are just as easy to use as circular motions, (and sometimes easier), on small panels and panels or sections that are longer in one direction while narrow in the other direction. Some times the panel itself will determine which direction you will apply your product.

An example would be the painted pillar on the side of the windshield on my Blazer.

Common sense tells you, (as well as the actual application of a product), that it will be easier and more efficient to use straight-line motions versus circular motions to apply a polish or wax to this thin, narrow painted section, than it will be to use circular motions.

The key thing to remember is this, if you’re applying non-abrasive products, i.e. products that do not scratch or scour the finish, and your applying them with a soft, clean applicator and using good technique, then you should not be instilling any scratches or swirls no matter what direction you’re moving your hand.

Sorry for all the questions but I figure I might as well get it right the first time.

    Thanks
We hope the above answers some or all of your questions...

Thanks Mike, I am loving this forum already.

One more question though, I just pick up the even coat applicators and some super plush terry towels, are these good for applying and removing the polish and wax? I have always used the plain foam applicators, but I thought I would try these.

      Thanks Again

When it comes to applicators, it's part personal preference and part process. It's one of those things where you'll never know what you like best until you try.

I find the Even Coat Applicators the best tool for applying a spray wax.

Using Meguiar's Even Coat Applicator to apply NXT Spray Wax

With the introduction of the new high quality tools in Meguiar's new Accessory line, the question recently came up,

"How well will the new Even Coat Applicator work to apply Meguiar's Spray Waxes?"

Since I have a couple of prototype applicator pads in my possession, as well as some samples of Meguiar's new Supreme Shine Microfiber polishing cloths, I thought I would wash the Pilot and test out the new applicators for applying a spray wax and the new microfibers for removing the dried spray wax.

First, I washed the Pilot using NXT Car Wash and a Lambs Wool Wash Mitt. To document how long it took me from start to finish, I turned on the Time Stamp feature on my Sony Mavica FD97 Digital Camera.

        Even Coat Applicator
        NXT Generation Spray Wax
        Supreme Shine Microfiber

It was getting late and another question that recently was asked was,

"Does temperature affect application and removal?"

So I plan on paying close attention to the ease or difficulty of application and removal as well as document the temperature and humidity.

Here's a screen shot of the temperature and humidity available online as supplied by www.weather.com for Apple Valley, CA at the time I started.

Even Coat Applicator Pads - Prototypes
These new applicator pads use a high quality microfiber sewn over a soft foam pad inside. The size of this pad makes it easy to hold in your hand while applying a variety of liquid products.

Even Coat Applicator Pad and NXT Spray Wax

Applying NXT Spray Wax directly to one side of the Even Coat Applicator Pad

After dampening one side of the Even Coat Applicator pad with NXT Spray Wax, I began to apply a thin, even coat to the Pilot's finish.

I found the new Even Coat Microfiber Applicator Pad to apply and spread a nice, even coating of the NXT Spray Wax. It's important when applying any wax whether it's a paste wax, a liquid wax, or a spray wax to apply a thin, even coating. Excess wax on the surface merely wastes product and makes removal more difficult.

Just to note, I did apply wax to the roof also.

After I applied wax to all of the exterior paint, I stopped and took this photo for the time stamp. It took me less than 20 minutes to apply a thin even coating of NXT Spray Wax to the entire finish including chrome and plastic headlight covers and taillights.

I let the wax dry for approximately 10-12 minutes before removing it. This is how long it took before it began to haze. This is much longer than it usually takes in warmer weather. So temperature does affect drying time. I did not notice any increased difficulty in removing this wax at this temperature.

To remove the dried wax, I used Meguiar's brand new Supreme Shine Microfiber polishing cloth. These new microfiber polishing cloths are incredibly soft and plush to the touch. They are larger than Meguiar's Ultimate Wipe,

And thicker than the Ultimate Wipe. Meguiar's Ultimate Wipe premium quality microfibers are still excellent microfiber polishing cloths, but now you have another option for your personal preference.

        Unique Quality Features

        · Incredibly plush microfiber produces amazing mirror-like shine on all finishes.
        · Thick, deep, dual-sided microfiber pile absorbs three times more than traditional terry towels for amazing results.
        · Safety edging eliminates the possibility of scratching.
        · Pre-washed for maximum absorbency.
        · Clear coat safe

        Part Number: X2010
        Suggested Retail Price $3.99

Here's shot of the Pilot right after I finished making my last wipe to remove the wax. I used one Supreme Shine Microfiber polishing cloth for the entire finish and it took me approximately 15 minutes to remove the wax. I did notice it was a little harder to remove then it is in warmer temperatures.

It was getting pretty dark and the 2.1 Mega-pixel Sony doesn't do well in low light. Here's some after shots with the Sony.

I lightened the best one to give a better view.

Now I've switched over to the Cannon Digital Rebel and pulled the Pilot out to an area where what's left of the sun is still shining. It's approximately 8 minutes after 6:00pm

My opinion: the new Even Coat Applicators work great for applying a spray wax.

Hi Mike, a couple of questions for you.

From your posting, you mentioned that NXT is a pure wax, doesn't it come with some cleaner so can it consider a pure wax ?

Next it is regarding the GC wax, you listed it as a polish/wax. So does it contains any cleaning property in term of chemical cleaner or abbrasive cleaner ? I remeber reading that GC does contain cleaner so it is getting a bit confusing.

NXT Tech Wax does contain a sleight amount of specialized cleaners, because the amount is so little, it doesn't really fall into the same class as a true cleaner/wax like a ColorX type product or Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax in our Consumer Line. For this reason it's somewhat hard to categorize within the existing wax categories. I guess it should get it's own class, or category of waxes such as a Specialty Wax.

Next it is regarding the GC wax, you listed it as a polish/wax. So does it contains any cleaning property in term of chemical cleaner or abrasive cleaner ? I remember reading that GC does contain cleaner so it is getting a bit confusing.
The Polish/Wax category if for waxes that are primarily formulated using protection ingredients and polishing oils for beauty and gloss. That said, I've been told that Gold Class Wax also contains a slight amount of cleaning agents to help insure a clear, clean surface for the polishing oils to enable the polishing oils to penetrate into the paint and for the protection ingredients to better bond to the finish.

The majority of people that wax their cars drive them, this means the paint is exposed to wear & tear as well as attack from the environment, as such, a little cleaning of the finish insures an optically clear[/b] finish so that your eyes can see the full richness of color and beauty of your car's paint.

Hope this helps, in the end after you apply and remove the wax of your choice, the only real importance is the results you experience.

After I applied wax to all of the exterior paint, I stopped and took this photo for the time stamp. It took me less than 20 minutes to apply a thin even coating of NXT Spray Wax to the entire finish including chrome and plastic headlight covers and taillights.
I noticed that you didn't tape off anything before applying the wax. Did you get any on the rubber weatherstripping, and did it cause white stains later on?
