Questions about #7 Glaze and GC Wax

I currently use the Show Car Glaze #7 and the new Gold Class Wax on my '01 truck which is black. It is my understanding that the Gold Class Wax is a polish and a wax, is this correct?

Is it beneficial to use both these products on my truck?

If so should I wait any amount of time after using the Glaze before applying the wax?

Is there any special technique for using the Gold Class wax or just apply it like any ordinary wax?

Last question, I have been told that using an orbital buffer or circular motions when polishing and waxing will cause swirl marks and that a back and forth motion when applying polish and wax is better, is this true?

Sorry for all the questions but I figure I might as well get it right the first time.

Yes, Gold Class Wax is a polish/wax, here's some information on Meguiar's waxes.

What are the differences between Meguiar's waxes?

Here at Meguiar's we are often asked why we have so many products? A variation of this question is, "Why does Meguiar's have so many waxes?"

Here's the answer:

Over the years, we have developed some very unique and highly specialized waxes that have attained their own following of loyal fans. All of the waxes Meguiar's manufactures are exclusive formulas, each offering the end-user its own unique features and benefits.

Two people with identical cars with the identical color and type of paint may prefer different Meguiar's waxes according to… what looks good in their eyes.

Who are we to argue?

What's more important is that you, our valued customer, know that whichever Meguiar's wax you choose, you can rest assured that you're getting the very best wax money can buy, not only in appearance results but also in protection results.

For that reason, it can be hard to recommend a specific wax because we're all individuals. Typically, we can share information about each of our waxes, and then let you use the product and make up your own mind.

If you're not 100% completely satisfied with any Meguiar's product, just return the unused portion to Meguiar's along with your receipt and we will gladly refund you money.

Sometimes, it's just a matter of experimenting with our different waxes to find just the right one that best suits your particular set of circumstances as well as your personal tastes. Some things to consider when choosing a wax are the environmental conditions in your area and the amount of time you are willing to invest in waxing each year.

All new cars, trucks, and S.U.V.'s require a non-abrasive wax that is safe for clear coat paints. All Meguiar's waxes are non-abrasive, this means Meguiar's waxes contain no ingredients that will abrade the paint or instill a scratch.

You can safely use any Meguiar's wax on any new car's finish and easily produce excellent results. That said, some Meguiar's waxes are more suited for a finish that is new and in excellent condition, while some Meguiar's waxes offer a light chemical cleaner for finishes in less than perfect condition.

A finish in new or excellent condition would benefit more from a Meguiar's polish/wax or pure wax because they don't contain any chemical cleaners and instead offer a more concentrated blend of polishing oils and protection ingredients.

A finish that has been neglected, or is a few years old, would benefit more from a Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax because the non-abrasive chemical cleaners will safely and effectively clean the surface by removing contaminants producing a more clear and glossy finish. Remember, your end results are always determined by the condition of the surface to start with, and the prep work you do before applying a protective coating. If your finish is severely neglected, you might consider using a dedicated paint cleaner before applying any wax.

Is it beneficial to use both these products on my truck?

Yes. Applying two products like a pure polish followed by a polish wax will insure your black truck is as deep, dark clear, glossy and reflective as possible. If this is what you're after then definitely use both products. Besides that, just the act of pushing smooth creamy lotion type products over your truck's paint has a polishing or smoothing effect which helps to increase gloss.

If so should I wait any amount of time after using the Glaze before applying the wax?

No. Compounds, Paint Cleaners, Cleaner/Polishes, and Pure Polishes do not need to dry and you don't need to wait for any amount of time after using them before moving on to the next step. Also, when applying pure polishes and polish/waxes and pure waxes, thin coats worked in well are much better than thick coats. Thick coats just wastes product and make removal more difficult.

Is there any special technique for using the Gold Class wax or just apply it like any ordinary wax?

Apply a thin coat and work in well, usually two to three passes over each square inch using a clean, soft foam applicator.

Last question, I have been told that using an orbital buffer or circular motions when polishing and waxing will cause swirl marks and that a back and forth motion when applying polish and wax is better, is this true?

Circles or Straight Lines?

Thank your for your questions. Meguiar’s official response to this question is this,

If you’re using a non-abrasive product with a high quality, clean, soft foam applicator pad, and you’re working on a clean surface, then it shouldn't’t matter which direction you move the applicator pad over the finish because nothing you’re using will be instilling any scratches or swirls into the finish.

The above being true, then some panels lend themselves better to straight line motions, while other panels lend themselves better to circular motions.

Examples:

Circular Motions
Most people find it’s easier to apply products in circular motions to large panels like the hood of a car. The reason for this is because circular motions act to help you spread your product out over large areas for more even, and thorough coverage. Some people also feel that circular motions help you to better work products into the finish. One thing for sure, moving your applicator pad in a circular motion tends to feel natural, and appears to come natural to most people. (Hand a wax applicator to 10 people and ask them to apply some wax to the hood of a car and stand back and watch how they apply the wax).

Straight Line Motions
Without good technique, applying products using straight-line motions is more difficult on larger panels. Straight-line motions are just as easy to use as circular motions, (and sometimes easier), on small panels and panels or sections that are longer in one direction while narrow in the other direction. Some times the panel itself will determine which direction you will apply your product.

An example would be the painted pillar on the side of the windshield on my Blazer.



Common sense tells you, (as well as the actual application of a product), that it will be easier and more efficient to use straight-line motions versus circular motions to apply a polish or wax to this thin, narrow painted section, than it will be to use circular motions.

The key thing to remember is this, if you’re applying non-abrasive products, i.e. products that do not scratch or scour the finish, and your applying them with a soft, clean applicator and using good technique, then you should not be instilling any scratches or swirls no matter what direction you’re moving your hand.

Sorry for all the questions but I figure I might as well get it right the first time.

When it comes to applicators, it's part personal preference and part process. It's one of those things where you'll never know what you like best until you try.

I find the Even Coat Applicators the best tool for applying a spray wax.

Using Meguiar's Even Coat Applicator to apply NXT Spray Wax

With the introduction of the new high quality tools in Meguiar's new Accessory line, the question recently came up,

"How well will the new Even Coat Applicator work to apply Meguiar's Spray Waxes?"

Since I have a couple of prototype applicator pads in my possession, as well as some samples of Meguiar's new Supreme Shine Microfiber polishing cloths, I thought I would wash the Pilot and test out the new applicators for applying a spray wax and the new microfibers for removing the dried spray wax.

First, I washed the Pilot using NXT Car Wash and a Lambs Wool Wash Mitt. To document how long it took me from start to finish, I turned on the Time Stamp feature on my Sony Mavica FD97 Digital Camera.

It was getting late and another question that recently was asked was,

"Does temperature affect application and removal?"

So I plan on paying close attention to the ease or difficulty of application and removal as well as document the temperature and humidity.

Here's a screen shot of the temperature and humidity available online as supplied by www.weather.com for Apple Valley, CA at the time I started.



Even Coat Applicator Pads - Prototypes
These new applicator pads use a high quality microfiber sewn over a soft foam pad inside. The size of this pad makes it easy to hold in your hand while applying a variety of liquid products.

After dampening one side of the Even Coat Applicator pad with NXT Spray Wax, I began to apply a thin, even coat to the Pilot's finish.



I found the new Even Coat Microfiber Applicator Pad to apply and spread a nice, even coating of the NXT Spray Wax. It's important when applying any wax whether it's a paste wax, a liquid wax, or a spray wax to apply a thin, even coating. Excess wax on the surface merely wastes product and makes removal more difficult.







Just to note, I did apply wax to the roof also.



After I applied wax to all of the exterior paint, I stopped and took this photo for the time stamp. It took me less than 20 minutes to apply a thin even coating of NXT Spray Wax to the entire finish including chrome and plastic headlight covers and taillights.



I let the wax dry for approximately 10-12 minutes before removing it. This is how long it took before it began to haze. This is much longer than it usually takes in warmer weather. So temperature does affect drying time. I did not notice any increased difficulty in removing this wax at this temperature.

To remove the dried wax, I used Meguiar's brand new Supreme Shine Microfiber polishing cloth. These new microfiber polishing cloths are incredibly soft and plush to the touch. They are larger than Meguiar's Ultimate Wipe,



And thicker than the Ultimate Wipe. Meguiar's Ultimate Wipe premium quality microfibers are still excellent microfiber polishing cloths, but now you have another option for your personal preference.

Here's shot of the Pilot right after I finished making my last wipe to remove the wax. I used one Supreme Shine Microfiber polishing cloth for the entire finish and it took me approximately 15 minutes to remove the wax. I did notice it was a little harder to remove then it is in warmer temperatures.

It was getting pretty dark and the 2.1 Mega-pixel Sony doesn't do well in low light. Here's some after shots with the Sony.





I lightened the best one to give a better view.



Now I've switched over to the Cannon Digital Rebel and pulled the Pilot out to an area where what's left of the sun is still shining. It's approximately 8 minutes after 6:00pm





My opinion: the new Even Coat Applicators work great for applying a spray wax.

mike sorry i but wanted to know what is the correct application form for the #7 glaze. i have heard to apply to the entire vehicle, let it skim, and to remove with a microfiber. i have also heard to apply to a small area and to remove quickly ( when still wet ) with a microfiber. how do you use your #7?

Next it is regarding the GC wax, you listed it as a polish/wax. So does it contains any cleaning property in term of chemical cleaner or abbrasive cleaner ? I remeber reading that GC does contain cleaner so it is getting a bit confusing.

NXT Tech Wax does contain a sleight amount of specialized cleaners, because the amount is so little, it doesn't really fall into the same class as a true cleaner/wax like a ColorX type product or Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax in our Consumer Line. The Polish/Wax category if for waxes that are primarily formulated using protection ingredients and polishing oils for beauty and gloss. That said, I've been told that Gold Class Wax also contains a slight amount of cleaning agents to help insure a clear, clean surface for the polishing oils to enable the polishing oils to penetrate into the paint and for the protection ingredients to better bond to the finish.

The majority of people that wax their cars drive them, this means the paint is exposed to wear & tear as well as attack from the environment, as such, a little cleaning of the finish insures an optically clear[/b] finish so that your eyes can see the full richness of color and beauty of your car's paint.

Hope this helps, in the end after you apply and remove the wax of your choice, the only real importance is the results you experience.

I noticed that you didn't tape off anything before applying the wax. Did you get any on the rubber weatherstripping, and did it cause white stains later on?
