  • Weird marks on car, could use advice

So I recently got a new car and wanted to take care of it properly, but don't have any experience with waxing and ran into some issues. On Monday I rinsed my car, then washed it with a meguiars car wash product (drawing a blank on the exact one, but I think it was the gold class). I didn't have any issues and the car looked good. I then used meguiars smooth surface clay bar, though I'm new to using clay bars and tried to clean some of the blemishes on my car. Again, no issues.

I then waxed my car using meguiars ultimate liquid wax and ran into some issues. It felt like the applicator was dragging at times, so i applied more and more wax each time. In the end I somehow used half the bottle for my car and after a lot of polishing on the hood, got all the streaks out. The car looked good.

About 4 hours later it rained very hard and the car was great, except for the trunk which had a lot of spring and run off of wax? I used meguiars quik detailer and it looked great again.

Fast forward, thursday morning it looked great. But I had to drive through a bad snow storm and when I arrived, my entire car looked horrible. I've driven other cars in snow and salt and they look a little messy, but never like this. I can't figure out of this is poor waxing, bad wax, or just salt.

I'm very new to detailing and wax and really want some advice on what this is and how to correct it. I'm convinced it's the wax. My other question is, does over washing (during winter) remove the wax quicker? Is it correct to assume the quik detailer is a temporary fix until I wash again?

Any and all help would be appreciated.

*The pictures are what happened after I drove through the snow.

Welcome to MOL and sorry to see your trouble.

It looks like this is some sort of contaminant from the road which made it's way onto your car in the snow storm and just happened to be right after you waxed it. Even if you did use half of the bottle of wax, by the time you applied, and buffed off the residue, the actual thickness of the barrier left behind is very microscopic, and it doesn't have ability to run off the paint & leaves marks like this in rain and/or snow.

We are sorry to hear about your trouble using Ultimate Liquid Wax. It is very different from any other wax we have produced in the past, and the application can feel a little different. Application can be much easier than a traditional wax if a nice thin coat of the product is applied, but application can be very challenging if too much product is used, and it sounds as though you have figure that out.

Keep in mind, we do not recommend waxing below 55 degrees Farhenhit. This is not necessarily going to hurt anything but can make application difficult, the wax will not set up right.

Washing frequently with a dedicated car wash solution will not have a significant impact on the longevity of your wax, in fact, the more frequent you can keep the paint completely clean, the better, i.e. weekly washing. Many users around the world will also use one of our Quik Detailer for touchs up in-between washing.

A good thorough wash certainly is in order! Remember to dilute your car wash solution properly. Most of our Car Wash Solutions like Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo & Conditioner are 128:1 (one ounce of wash per gallon of water used). It's almost better to fill the water up first, and then pour the proper amount of solution in the bucket, and mix up from there. This prevents a big bucket of foam, and instead delivers you a properly mixed proportions of water/concentrate.

If you would like to give the Ultimate Wax another try, applying thin, we would encourage you to do so, because if you can get used to it, it is a great product. If you are not wanting to use Ultimate Liquid Wax again, and want to try something else, shoot me a PM, and we can see about sending you another product for your difficulty.

        Hope this helps.

What part of Ohio are you in? Maybe I'm close enough to help.
