  • Help me clean this sticky adhesive...

    Hi,

My HD Street Glide was parked in the garage for a long time without being exposed to sun but during summer time the garage was getting quite hot. After I removed the bike cover I saw strange thing but only on the plastic parts, e.g. the outer fairing, the side covers and the saddle bags, the metal parts like, the tank and the front and rear fenders are intact. This thing is like sticky adhesive, see it here...

I used the yellow foam applicator and rubbed it with Ultimate Compound, Ultimate Polish and Ultimate Liquid Wax, it loosens it but it gets spread until the finish becomes dull, I also used the DA polisher with the yellow foam pad but with the same result. I tried also the Stoner Tarminator Bug & Tar Remover but it didn't do a thing.

I have the bike since 2011 and for the fist time I see this thing, I am really puzzled now.

Please try to help, Thank you.

Weird! Have you tried something like 3M Wax and Adhesive Remover?

Goo Gone might take a little extra effort, but it should work as well. Basically, try using an actual adhesive remover that is also paint safe.

Here are some more shots of the side cover without applying anything on it.

You could always try a clay bar.

I forgot to mention that, I tried Meg's clay bar, it couldn't help.

A plastic razor blade is another option with an adhesive remover.

Sorry to see the trouble. I would also recommend attempting to use some type of automotive specific solvent or "wax & grease remover". These can typically be found in auto body or automotive paint supply stores. They are typically used for removing any petroleum based substance on automotive paint. These are typically applied by dispensing the solvent onto a towel, then in sections, gently apply, let it dwell for a short amount of time, and then begin wiping. It is a good idea to neutralize the areas after by washing with a properly diluted car wash solution. Any actual stain left behind can then be removed with a cleaner/polish or compound. Of course, this process will remove any wax left behind, so it would be recommended to wax afterwards for protection.

One thing I should mention is that this would be a last resort as it can marr the surface. So polishing would need to be done.

Thank you guys for your help.

Goo gone didn't help and then I visited an auto body paint stores and got Spies Hecker Permaloid Silicone Remover 7010.

I followed what Nick said, I applied the 7010 and It really helped loosen the sticky layer, following that I applied my favorite Meguiar's ColorX using the DA Polisher, and here is the result...
