  • White specs and fading black paint, please help.

The passenger side of my black 2008 Mercedes ML550 started to fade; I think from being in the sun, mostly the upper part of the doors and rear quarter panel. I washed and dried it, then used ultimate compound by hand with clean terry cloth towels (2-3 applications) followed by Mirror Glaze #7 (2-3 applications), followed by Hi Tech Yellow Wax #26. The paint improved, but there are still some spots that are faded. Also, these small white specs started to appear as I waxed the paint. They are not on top, it is almost like they are coming from under the paint. Should I go over it again with ultimate compound? Any help is greatly appreciated. I have pictures but am new so can't post them.
    Thanks
    Mike

Looks to me like the clear coat is failing.

Thanks. Any ideas on how to fix it or will I just make it worse? 95% of the car looks brand new; it is only a small portion of the passenger side.

Since the paint is in decent shape because of your recent work, I'd just keep some wax or sealant on it so that it's not exposed to the weather. A good paint shop might be able to repaint just the small part that's affected so that no one could tell the difference, but it may be hard to find someone who will take on a small job.

Unfortunately I have to agree with Joe Dragon. Looks like very early clear coat failure. I would also agree keeping a good coat of wax on the area can help since it is so early, but unfortunately the proper way to repair is to have repainted.

I would be curious to see a wider angle picture of the car & affected area as well.

Thanks for your input. Here are some wider angle pictures; unfortunately the sun wasn't out so the defects are not as noticeable. The worst of it is on the front and rear door right below the glass. Is there a way to prevent this from getting worse? Just keep it waxed?

              Thanks
