  • What is this velcro-like sound I'm getting on these polished panels?

I recently got my car back from the shop on a hail repair. The metal panels all got fresh paint (yay!) and the shop was kind enough to polish the plastic panels as well. I wanted to clean some dust from the rear bumper (plastic) and I'm hearing a velcro-like sound while wiping. It sounds awful! This is after I sprayed the panel and soaked the towel with ONR. Is this from the polish? What's going on? These panels were not painted, should I try waxing them?

I'm using the same meg's supreme shine and waffle weave towels I always have, this has never happened before. I tried the same with a few strategic test spots on the new paint and those seem just fine (no velcro sound).

Sounds like overspray to me. I would suggest returning it the bodyshop/ sort it yourself with a claybar.

I was actually at a shop a couple of times while they were working on it, and they had the plastic panels removed. I'm pretty sure they had them removed while painting and I saw them polishing the bumper on a stand after painting.

This might be tough to diagnose via forum. I would agree with rapport25, it does sound like paint over-spray, which has drifted from a painting area, and landed on an adjacent panel. Over-spray can travel very far. Most of the time over-spray can not even been seen visually on the paint.

Can you visually see any defect or anything wrong with the panel? This also could be a "dry spray," from the painters paint gun, which will not come off with a clay bar.

Have you tried to use a clay bar to determine if this fixes the issue?

Funny, seems smooth with the clay bar. I did a full wash last week and while there seemed to be some of that same static feel on some of the panels (both the freshly-painted and only-polished panels), I think I managed to accomplish washing without inducing any clear coat scratching.
