  • Clearcoat artifacts using spray cans for clearcoat

Hello all! Happy Fathers Day and greetings from Puerto Rico!

I believe I fell victim to malfunctioning spary can nozzles during applicaton of clearcoat. The base coat cans worked flawlessly with no issues with the nozzles and the finish came out beautifully. That was my last happy moment with this job. I waited 3 hours after my final base and started applyng the clear. An hour before this I shook all three cans for at least 10 minutes each and for another 5 minutes immediately before using. Also during use. I do not install the nozzles until I start spraying. I spray a test pattern before applying to the panel. 30 seconds into my first Coat the spray started sputtering with inconsistant flow and volume. Almost like a spray can about to become empty. Since this was my first coat I planned to spray a light coat to begin for better adhesion for subsequent coats. I continued applyng the first coat and made every effort to complete full and even coverage. But I believe the damage was already done.

I decided to use a different can, shaking for the 10 minute duration of time waiting to apply my second coat. Same problem. At this point I do not know if I can trust these nozzles and plan to purchase a quality, hand held spray nozzle for future use. Also not sure if this problem is somhow related to Pressurization in the cans. I did manage to apply 2 full, wet coats after the first coat but I think the damage was already done because of the inconsistent spray/flow patterns.

There are areas that layered beautifully but there are areas that are matted with no gloss resulting in a skunk like, blotchy pattern. I let this dry overnight and attempted removal of the clear coat by wetsanding starting at 1000 grit up to 2000 grit. The sanding residue is still milky white with no base blue so I have not yet Sanded through to the base coat. I did not want to use a solvant because I do not want to affect the base coat which is beautiful. When washng away the sanding residue the base looks great and exactly what it should look like after clearing and cuttng.

What is the best approach to fix this? Altho I have not sanded through to the base and I suspect I can't simply apply new coats of clear onto the sanded panel. Or can I? If OK to go that route will the new clear bond correctly to the base and a thin coating of sanded clear that has been dry for over 48 hours? I would really prefer not to re-sand the base coat and reapply unless, based on input I receive, that is the best or only option.

Any thoughts and advice will be much appreciated!

Welcome to Meguiar's Online. Apologize to see you are not getting any feedback from your post. I myself am not an expert painter, and most of the members of this community are detailing enthusiasts, and not necessarily enthusiast of the actual painting process. I believe you may need to source another outlet for assistance on your project. Once you are done painting, we can certainly provide feedback then!
