  • Introduction and major problem!

    Hi all.

    Damian in south Louisiana here.

Sorry to hit the thread with problems but here goes. Bought a new white platinum metallic f150 last Saturday. It came off the line in January of 2016. Yesterday I waxed it using Meguiars cleaner wax. Now every piece of painted plastic is stained yellow!!! That is, all of the sheet metal is fine. But the plastic on the front bumper, the grill around the headlamps, the piece behind the door handles, and a piece at the front bottom corner of the truckbed is stained yellow. Nothing's taking it off. I have a buddy who owns a body shop and he tried everything. He says to take it back to the dealership as the paint used on the plastic pieces may be defective. So my questions are...has anyone ever heard of this with this wax? Any known issues at all with the truck paint or otherwise? Defective paint? Warranty coverage? At this point I'm grasping for ideas. Any advice you may have would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Damian!

Whoof, that had to be an unpleasant thing to find when you walked out to your truck! Several questions:

Just to confirm, you applied the cleaner wax over all of the plastic? Is it smooth painted plastic?
Is the staining consistent/even or is it blotchy in any way?
Which Cleaner Wax did you use - the one in the maroon bottle?
Do you have any pictures of the truck and the staining?
What did your friend use to try to remove the staining?
Did you notice the staining while you were applying the wax (guessing not), after you buffed it off, or after an extended amount of time?
How long did you leave the wax on before buffing the residue off?

Definitely odd, and I tend to agree with your friend in his suggestion to take it back to the dealership. I've used Meguiar's Cleaner Wax on all sorts of things (vehicles, musical instruments, RVs) and never had an issue like this.

      Yes, all over the plastic.
It is smooth painted to match the truck.
      I used the maroon paste.
The stain is mostly smooth but intense or blotchy in some areas.
Left it on long enough to wax the rest of the truck....20 minutes give or take
did it in the garage not the sun. Mid 80s
He tried a wax remover and an abrasive remover that had sand in it. And I've tried every remover possible.
I didn't notice the staining when applying, just when I went to buff. You could see it immediately after buffing.

Sorry, Posting pics here seems out of my realm of understanding as I'm using my phone.

Just don't tell them you tried cleaning it with an abrasive that contained sand. That probably did more damage than good.

We tested a really small area just to see if it was residual wax. No worries.

DamianS, Welcome to MOL and sorry to hear about your trouble. We very rarely hear of this happening with our paste wax/painted white plastic and have found there is absolutely no permanent damage, but unfortunately the only remedy is time. After a few days the appearance should dissipate.

We would ask that you please contact our Solutions Hub tomorrow at 800-347-5700. They are open from 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM PST. We again apologize for any inconvenience.
