  • Clearcoat failure?

I have some questions with this defect I found today. https://m.imgur.com/a/palrH
ive taken multiple pictures to hopefully give some more detail.

Does this look like clearcoat failure or oxidation?
If im able to remove it with a polish, should it then be assumed that it just oxidation?
    Is polishing it safe?

    please help! Thanks.

I've seen something that looked very similar a while back on cars parked near an old building that was being acid etched to clean the brick. They used a very corrosive acid and it was very windy. A parking lot adjacent to the building was full and many of cars looked like that. The insurance company for the firm doing the cleaning, tried to polish the cars but that didn't work and all the damaged cars needed to be repainted. The acid also etched the glass on these vehicles and many needed new glass all around. I can't say if that is what I'm seeing from your photos but if you think it is possible that something similar may have occurred, wash the vehicle with baking soda immediately then try a polish.

    What have you tried?

Welp now I'm confused. I polished it and it's gone... see this before and after... https://m.imgur.com/a/vm66W
since I was able to polish it, what could it be?

If you were able to polish it out, great. It is probably not clear coat failure. It could have been anything, you may never know. Just be happy it came off. If it happens again, remember where you parked and under what, and try not to park there again. If you want examples of clearcoat failure check out this post:
