  • 3M painters tape options?

    Hey All,

This was off my brothers 2001 4Runner that is parked outside all the time. The tape was on for only a few hours and this happened. Is this normal or are there options so this doesn't happen?

This also happened on my 2001 Toyota Tundra that has been garaged since it was bought.

    Hi P-Shooter,

From what I know about tape, the blue tape is technically for home use. We use the automotive specific green tape, which does have less tack. With that said, 3 hours sitting outside, or even 3 hours in the shade, on a 16 year old vehicle, I think these were the main variables which contributed to the reaction, & not so much what tape you were using, IMO.

I had the blue tape peel a section of paint off of one of my cars. There are specific tapes designed for automotive finish use and it does make a difference.

What I will say about tape on rubber seals is the rubber is probably oxidized and you're peeling some of that up with the tape. I generally don't even bother taping anymore except in specific cases like glass polishing. Rubber seals get scrubbed and dressed prior to polishing and I have no issues with polishing sticking to them that way.

When I say scrubbed I mean APC on a microfiber and actually scrub. Removing all oxidization is key before applying dressings to rubber. No different than a tire really.

Nick is absolutely correct, don't allow tape to sit on for a period of time. Check the printing on the inside of the tape roll, it must say "delicate surface". Frog brand also makes a green tape used in residential/commercial wall painting. So the color of the tape isn't always an indicator.

Had a neighbor leave his car out in the sun for several days with regular masking tape on his car. It turned to basically paper and cement stuck to his car. Terrible job to remove.

It is if you are using 3M brand tape, otherwise no.

Personally I've been using the tape that CarPro USA sells. Easy release and very flexible
