  • remove scratches on rocker cover

    Hi All,

I need your advice, I have been used green scotch brite pad to removed the sticky stuff on my rocker cover. I have applied C4 Permanent Trim Restorer on the rocker cover to try to restore to the original colour as I have left it for 4 minutes before wipe it off. When I used the microfibre cloth to wipe it down on the plastic, the colour got faded and it went back to where it was as before where I got scratches. And I have also tried with solution finish to try to restore to the original colour but I still get the same results so I don't know what to do with it.

    Here is the pictures:

Can you please help me with what I have to do??

I am thinking to get a heat gun, would that help??

    Thanks in advance

That's a tough one. Not sure how difficult this would be, but how about some black high heat spray paint?

What comes to mind is, would a heat gun be hot enough? It's obviously made for some pretty high heat, being on the engine.

We call them valve covers here in the States.

Sorry, not much help at all, I know. What kind of car is it, out of curiosity?

None of Meguiar's products designed to clean & restore colored plastic, rubber, or vinyl, have the ability to hide or remove scratches in these materials. We apologize for any inconvenience.

I am not familiar with any products on the market which provide this or I would be happy to advise.

Those Scotch Brite pad should never be near a vehicle, unless it is just in a bag bringing them home from the store. They are made for pots and pans, not plastic or paint. Once you scratch those valve (rocker) covers, nothing in a can or bottle will restore them. There may be professional people that may be able to do something (paint or refinish) but you will have to research that.

Thinking outside the box a little here. This may be a terrible idea, but would sanding the affected sides, along with the matching other side, with a fine grit sandpaper going the same direction to create a uniform appearance be acceptable in this case? Maybe even going as far as eventually getting to 2000+ grit, then hitting it with some Ultimate Compound or similar to really smooth it out. I don't know. Maybe some others can chime in, I'm just throwing an idea out there.

This is just me, but I would think about just sanding it, priming it and then repainting. As much time as you would invest trying to save that, it'll probably easier to restart. That stuff, while is paint, is baked on and very hard to sand and polish.

Re: remove scratches on rocker cover

Is it the actual valve cover or is it the plastic piece that covers them, to hide wires, tubes, etc?
