  • what causes this?

After wiping it down with rubbing alcohol I applied black trim kote to this plastic. After it is buffed and dried there's a shine but after words it looks like smears. If I buff it again it puts the shine back then later it goes back to the second picture.

That's what I thought. But when I go over it, it goes away but later it starts again. Don't know if it has to do with the warm weather or not. It's like when u apply dressing and it starts to ware off but when u buff it it's like new. Confusing.

Haven't used those on plastic trim, as I use Ultimate Black (UB). Looks like your plastic trim is dried out, so to speak, but only in certain areas. UB will soak in very well and evenly, and then I use UWWA and/or QW on top to kinda "seal" the oils from running/smearing.

We are not familiar with the product you are using also but are you wiping the product with a towel after application? Is this required? If not we would try to get your application to a point where you can just apply the product with an applicator pad, work it in, and not touch it after that point. This type of application is recommended for best results with a product like our Ultimate Black Plastic Restorer gel (G15812). Apply a small amount with a soft foam applicator pad like our X3070, thoroughly work the product into the surface and no wiping with a towel should be needed. This generally leaves the most "even" appearance.
