  • Witchcraft Project - Take 3

"Witchcraft" in this context is a B24J bomber from WWII, not some kind of hocus pocus nonsense. This is the third time we have been involved in bringing back some luster to this amazing piece of history, thanks to Joe Fernandez of the world famous Superior Shine! Joe didn't really have the opportunity to refresh the plane last year, so it's been two full years since we last saw her, and she definitely needed some attention. Well, she got it, and more!

Joe put out the word on Facebook, thinking he'd get some local detailers to help out (as per usual) but instead ended up with guys coming in from Las Vegas, Washington DC and more!! In all we had a crew of 18, the most we've ever had on the project. Unfortunately, however, weather conditions conspired against us and we had to delay the project by several days, meaning the plane would no longer be at John Wayne Airport (about 5 minutes from Meguiar's HQ) but rather at Van Nuys Airport, an almost 2 hour drive away. Except during afternoon rush hour. Nick Winn and I spent almost 3 hours together for the drive home!!!

We shot a quickie video that we posted to Meguiar's Facebook, but if you haven't seen it yet, we've reposted here for you. And speaking of videos, the keen eyed among you will spot a camera crew in a couple of these shots; that's our own in-house team who were on site shooting the event for an upcoming video we're producing on the project.

So, how do you refresh a plane this old, with a green and gray matte paint job? Well, you get 18 guys and hook them all up with MT300 dual action polishers, DFP5 yellow foam polishing pads, a bottle of M20 Polymer Sealant (remember, M20 is essentially a synthetic cleaner wax!), a spray bottle of D156 Synthetic Express Spray Wax (the pro packaging of Ultimate Quik Wax) and a bunch of microfiber towels. Given them about 8 hours (so roughly 165 man hours) and voila!

Scoffolds, extension cords, generators, and a couple of nifty extensions for the DA buffers (check out the far left side of the picture; that's Enrique Torres polishing the wing in comfort!) and we're in business.

Autogeek was one of the sponsors, helping cover the cost of food and drinks for the crew, event t-shirts, etc.

That's Erik Walschek on the scaffold, and Kyle Ruby giving thumbs up on the tarmac. It's fair to say that they actually had as much fun as they appear to be having here! ACE Clearwater Enterprises was another event sponsor.

    How's this for a 50/50 shot!?!?!?!

Chris Woolman makes himself comfortable as he polishes the engine cover.

Enrique with the buffer extension again.

    Come on, Sergio Serrano, r-e-a-c-h!!!!!!!

Matt Ward wiping off the M20 residue and revealing a shine!

Chad Kirby on the left, Luis Rodriguez (Psynx here on MOL) on the right.

Chad and Luis again. Geez guys, mugging for the camera or polishing a plane - which is it???

Chris Jankowski, Cougar Elfervig and John Perdue (l. to r.)

The whole crew - with Joe being the most worn out of the group! He did, after all, set all this up, bring the scaffolding, crack the whip all day long to make sure everyone was working, take pictures of everything, and more. He's allowed to be a bit tired!

Thanks to all the sponsors who helped cover the various costs - ACE Clearwater Enterprises, Autogeek, Rupes USA, and The Rag Company - and of course to Joe Fernandez for making it all happen, and for all these fantastic pictures! And a huge thank you to all the guys on the crew who took a day (or more) off work to volunteer their time for this project:

    Anthony Alvarado
    Chris Jankowski
    John Perdue

      OUTSTANDING gentlemen!

When are they gonna attack that B-17 in the background?

Lotta local history surrounds Van Nuys airport way back when.
