  • Tuesday Night Garage with Motor Trend's Jessi Lang

    Well that was fun!!

As per usual, the team did an outstanding job on this project and we can't thank them enough for coming down to work on someone else's car for the sheer fun of it all!

To say that Jessi Lang's beloved Subaru WRX was in need of some TLC is an understatement - just look at the level of water spotting on the hood, the swirls throughout the paint, and even the scuff marks on the door thanks to the exuberance of her dog, Miles.

After a quick wipe down with D114 it was obvious that the car needed to be clayed. Jessi may compete in the Global Time Attack with this car, but we call this TNOG Clay Attack!!

Such a trooper, Jessi tackles the lowest of the car herself.

With claying done, it's time for our first test spot. There is a lot of information that suggests modern Subaru paint is both soft and, annoyingly, sticky. Well, that may or may not include this car but we decide to start of easy, even with the paint as heavily marred as it was. M205 on a yellow foam polishing pad seems like a good start. And here's the best way to convey how much pressure should be put on the buffer - hands on!

Alan, the ever attentive towel assistant!

Well, it turns out we needed a bit more punch, so we stepped up the burgundy foam cutting pad but stayed with M205. That eradicated the defects pretty darn quickly, but even M205 would stick to this paint and be hard to wipe off! A second pass, with no fresh M205 added to the pad, and a lot of pressure, took care of that and left the paint looking pretty darn fantastic.

Yep, that's a major improvement, for sure!

So, with a plan of attack..... we attacked!!

This is the trunk lid before starting. Swirls and scratches galore - scary!!

Here's the trunk lid before and after. You know it's bad when you don't even need a swirl finder light to see the difference!

Time to get Jessi schooled in using the MT300 and finish off the other side of the trunk lid.

Hmmmm.....great use of M39 to clean those dirty tire sidewalls!

    What's wrong with this picture?

Jesse Teran from Detailing.com came down to lend a hand with the project.

Ric is hitting the top of the door where Miles left his claw marks.

Tim spent time cleaning the wheels, tires, vacuuming the interior - all the unsung grunt work, and he did it all with a smile!!!

Another case of dueling buffers? Jessi took to the MT300 like a seasoned pro, and had a blast learning how to correct paint defects.

Nick Winn shows Jessi the optional 4" pad for working on smaller areas.

Those claw marks Miles left behind are long gone. The fingernail scratches in the door cups were eventually addressed by hand.

    Non stop teamwork action.

The WRX is just about ready for a coat of Ultimate Wax paste.

Jeez, give the girl a little direction and she just takes over!! That 4" pad fits perfectly into the can of Ultimate paste, too.

Hey, she asked, so of course we obliged! Meguiar's decal on the base of the windshield and another on the passenger side rear quarter glass.

The happy, and tired, owner! Jessi put in a crazy amount of time with the MT300 and it was great to see her so excited to learn.

    Yep.

A parting shot with the whole crew. Again, we can't thank these awesome guys enough for putting in the time, all for just a bit of pizza!

What a great night! Got to see some old friends and make some new ones.

Jessi is a very special lady. She made sure she met everyone and thanked us all many times for working on her car. She was truly interested in getting to know each person. She may be small is size, but she has a heart the size of a mountain!

        Fun times last night!
Would have never ever tried a red pad and M205. I learn something new every time I walk into that building.
        Thanks Mike! Thanks Nick!
