  • clear coat question

I'm not sure I have this in the right forum but hopefully so.

I have a 2015 Hyundai which has some clear coat scratches on the hood. I've used a clear coat touch up paint which totally removes the defect. I'm sure the scratch doesn't go through the color coat. My problem is that the clear coat touch up won't go on flat enough and it while it's a serious improvement, it can be seen from the side. I'm thinking of using some 2500 wet and dry paper on a small sanding block to take the touch up paint down to the factory clear coat level and then polish or buff the clear coat. Is there any way to get this stuff on correctly right from the start or is it just best to figure on some sanding after the fact?

The chances of you laying down any touch up paint perfectly flat are virtually nil. A little bit of sanding and buffing is generally called for when using touch up paints. Have a look at this article on chip and scratch repair for some pointers.

      Re: clear coat question

      Dead thread revival:

A related question: Stopped in at a local body shop to have them remove some paint transferred from a post I bumped. (Post is beige, car is red.) The tech applied some sort of solvent that totally removed the paint transfer. I had him take a look at another spot on the car that was scratched from something unknown (could have been sliding into a snowbank--this winter has been the worst on record for snow/rain/ice.)

When he used the solvent on that spot, some pigment came off. Wasn't sure whether it's something to be concerned about. Figuring I can do regular correction with UC and my DA polisher. Wanted to know whether there's something else going on. Like I said, I don't know what solvent they used.

      Thanks.

If your car has a two-stage paint (color coat/clear coat), and red came off onto the towel, I'd be a bit concerned because that means the clear is gone. Unless I'm just misunderstanding...

It's definitely two stage paint, so for now I've been applying a coat of wax for protection. Later this year I'll have the shop fix the scratch and repaint that section.

            Update to the group:

Estimate for full repair is $1500. Not in the budget this year. Wax is. Will just keep a good coat on until I can get it professionally repaired.
