  • Pictures from January 23rd, 2016 Open Class

Our First 101 class of 2016 is off and running with a great class and good fun! A 2015 Audi A3 TDI is up for review.

After removing the dust with our Quik Detailer was a lesson in using a clay bar. Our subject certainly had plenty of bonded contaminants to remove even though it was purchased new only a couple of months ago. When evaluating the paint by feeling with our bare hand, it sounded like sand paper.

Next we inspected the paint for below surface defects using various types of lighting

Water spots, swirls, scratches, lack of clarity

Next up was information on how to perform a test spot, and since we do not know how this non metallic black paint is going to react to machine polishing, we start with a less aggressive approach, Ultimate Polish on our DFP5 Yellow Polishing Disc applied with our MT300 DA. We actually achieved about 70% defect removal, and tried to see if a second pass with Ultimate Polish would suffice, but it did not, and moved to Ultimate Compound on a separate clean yellow polishing disc.

I explain what we are seeing with our test spot and why we are choosing to use Ultimate Compound on a separate clean DFP5 Yellow Polishing Disc instead of going to our DFC5 Foam Cutting Disc. We are already getting about 70% defect removal with Ultimate Polish on a yellow polishing disc and chances are Ultimate Compound is going to take care of the rest. In this case, we did not need the strength of Ultimate Compound applied with a foam cutting disc.

MT300 DA, Ultimate Compound with a DFP5, horizontal & vertical 50% overlapping passes in a small 16 inch - 2ft square area at a time.

After Ultimate Compound on our DFP5.

Next we use Ultimate Polish's mild cleaning ability to refine the paint & add gloss after the compound step with a DFF5 Foam Finishing Disc.

A coat of Ultimate Liquid Wax added awesome gloss & depth and with no option for a sun shot on a overcast day in Orange County a reflection picture was in the order! Thanks to everyone for coming out!
