  • Skipping Strps

    Here's my situation and gear.

Meguiars all three soft foam pads burgundy cutting, yellow polishing, and black finishing used with UC, UP, ULW

    GEAR: Griots Garage 6

Recently test spot: UP with cutting pad, came out better than UC with cutting pad

Is it possible to go from UP with cutting pad direct to ULW?

Do I still need to UP with polishing pad
after then follow with ULW to complete a three-step correction?

    Is that an overkill?

Please many thoughts on this would help!

Ps sorry if you see this post elsewhere, still new to MOL

    Re: Skipping Strps

Do a test spot with UP/polishing pad and see if you notice a difference. If you see a noticeable improvement then continue. If it looks good enough for you with just the 1st step then proceed straight to wax.

    What color is your car?

        Re: Skipping Strps

If you can correct the defects to your satisfaction using UP and the cutting disc, and you don't see any annoying haze or other issues and are completely happy with the outcome, then you can indeed go straight to wax. But before doing that you might want to see what happens with a quick pass using the polishing disc with UP as a secondary step. If a test spot shows that this second step improves the finish, then you need to balance out how much of an improvement it yields with how long it will take to do this additional step and what your goals are for the car.

Our new burgundy cutting disc tends to leave a really nice finish, especially on harder paints, so it's not uncommon to go straight from cutting to wax. It all depends on how the paint reacts and what you're looking for. And while it is a bit unusual to pair UP with the cutting disc, it's not unheard of and we applaud you for experimenting a bit!!

          The verdict is in...

Until I can find a way to post pictures from my iPhone 5c, here it is. FIRST AND FOREMOST, THANK YOU All for your help on the matter I was having troubles with.

I worked hard at the car all morning and I tested what was suggested from the pro himself and here is what I concluded for those who are in a similar situation.

I first tested my car off with UP with the cutting pad, them followed the test spot with UP with the polishing pad.

In a different section, I tested UP with only the cutting pad.

After everything was said and done. I was more than content with just UP with the cutting pad!! Hooray!!

They both yielded extremely if not IDENTICAL results with the full UP polish shine.

With that said, I finished off the rest of the corrections with no more evidence of swirl marks and laid down a thin layer of ULW to lock things in.

          Thank you MOL community!
