  • Scratch-X Aftermath

Hey guys! I posted in the introductions forums first and received some help, but I thought I'd post here as a follow up.

I applied Scratch x to a few spots on 2 black Kias I own and while it did diminish the blemishes, what I got in return was a nice haze on the paint. Don't get me wrong, a coat of wax covers up this haze nicely and it only appears at the right angle with the right lighting, but it's bothering me. I tried polishing it out with a yellow foam applicator and some ultimate polish, but really didn't see any results.

This brings me to my questions.

Can this haze be fixed? I'm not a detailer...so is this something that can be done by hand?

If not, can a professional detailer get these out when I get the car detailed?

I wish I had some photos, but I'll need to bust out the DSLR and some lights to really get a good shot of it. It just looks like a haze and the finish is duller where I applied Scratch-X. That's the best I can describe it.

Thanks for any responses and/or help.

Yes, that can happen by hand, especially. It's essentially micro-scratches or holograms on the surface and would be easy to remedy with a dual-action polisher. I'd go back in with more UP, maybe even the same ScratchX followed by UP, and try to match the surrounding area before applying wax. Probably don't need to be too aggressive, and if it gets worse, stop until you can use a machine instead of working by hand. The UP might get it, though, or a cleaner-wax.

        ^^ What they said.

...And relax, it would be fixable.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

What did you apply the ScratchX with? We often see people using a terry cloth or microfiber applicator with it, and doing so with some pretty decent elbow grease to remove the offending scratch. Either type of applicator, especially the cotton terry cloth, will create haze that is easily visible on darker colors. An aggressive application can create haze severe enough that a light application of Ultimate Polish with a soft foam applicator, as you described having done, may not quite remove it all. So, crazy as this sounds, use that soft foam applicator with the original ScratchX product, but ease up a bit on the pressure and make sure you aren't putting direct fingertip pressure through the pad. That can create (visually) horrible marring.

This process is so common, in fact, that it's not unheard of for our Customer Care Center guys to recommend this to a customer only to have that customer call back and state that they now a super shiny spot on the car rather than a hazed spot and do they now have to do the whole car?!

Anytime you get haze as mike said use a less aggressive compound or polish and use light to lighter pressure.

Let the product do the work.
