  • 2002 Camaro Z28 Now Coated

Well to start off I did not take a lot of before photos. I was focused on getting this thing done as it's a daily driver.

This belongs to my dad. I mentioned to him that this would be something of an early fathers day gift. I was just teasing him.

I was looking for something that is more durable, longer lasting protection and somewhat less maintenance than a sealant since this is his daily driver that sits outside 24/7.

Originally I was not going to compound it but it was a good opportunity to remove the deeper coin op brush marks he put on it 2-3 years ago after I had corrected the paint. This car has hard paint. I gave M205 on a foam cutting disc a shot first and it was pretty good but not what I wanted. I switched over to D300 on the burgundy foam cutting disc and it was better but it was not what I wanted. M101 did a little better on the foam cutting disc but it dusted more than what I wanted to deal with. So I swapped over to the DAMF cutting disc which I know works on this paint with very little passes. So that combo is what I used for a majority of the car. The DAMF cutting disc works exceptionally well on the MT300. 4800 OPM's is still the sweet spot for using them.

It was a little humid here this weekend so I still got compound dust from D300 but it was manageable. That's another reason why I chose to go with D300 over M101. Even the polish I used dusted a bit. The paint was LSP ready after D300 but I wanted to maximize gloss so I still polished. I did do a rinseless wash with D114 prior to prepping the paint for the coating to remove the compound and polishing dust.

I did remove the rear spoiler to correct the trunk underneath it and to give me access to the underside of the spoiler. That was my test area for applying the coating.

It took me roughly 15 hours give or take to get this done.

I started off by using this wash method written by Mike Phillips. It's such a time saver.

The Aggressive Approach to Washing a Car In my first and second editions of my how-to book I teach two ways to wash a car, The Aggressive Approach - T

Wash: Adams Foam gun + Adams Car Shampoo + 2 bucket
Paint Decon: Ironx, Clay Magic Clay Bar, Nanoskin Fine Grade sponge, D155 Last Touch. The clay bar still worked better.
Compound: D300 + DAMF cutting discs
Polish: Ameridepth + Foam Finishing Discs
    Paint Prep: Car Pro Eraser
LSP: Ameriarmour Nano Glass Coating by Americana Car Care

    Wheels: Meguiar's D143 Non-Acid Wheel & Tire Cleaner

Tires: Meguiar's D143 Non-Acid Wheel & Tire Cleaner, Ultimate Black Tire Coating

Exhaust Tips: Meguiar's Fine Cut Metal Polish, Wolfgang Concourse Metal Sealant

Trim: D103 APC+, Wolfgang Exterior Trim Sealant

This is the only before photo I have lol. It's of the sail panel.

Afterwards out in the sun a day later. Angle of the sun was a little too much for my phone to focus.

One of the roof. Angle of the sun got me here as well.

The rear spoiler. The angle again.

These was taken yesterday after I finished.

I took these this morning. Was a little too sunny.

You can see the reflection of my junk pile on the driver side rear quarter panel.

Mine waiting it's turn. I will more than likely being coating my Camaro as well.

I only have a couple things left to do, which is coating the glass with Detailer's Pro Glass Coating and wheels with Pinnacle Black Label Diamond Wheel Coating. I'll get to those in the next week or so.

The paint coating is very slick. Much more than any sealant I have used. My dad was excited and impressed. He told me that he doesn't want to drive it now lol. We shall see how well the coating holds up.

As always you do great work Guz.

I love that blue. Did you apply with a micro suede over a block?
How was it to work with?

    Silver car after white??
where is Meguiars coating....when they find it you can be the beta tester

And happy fathers day to your Dad!!

      Thanks.

I talked to another detailer who uses this brand of coatings and polishes and he recommended the suede cloths and applicator from Car Pro. So that is what I used. Big thank you to him for helping me out with some helpful tips.

This was my first paint coating and it was ridiculously easy to use. Very little product goes a long way. I have a little over half the bottle remaining and it's a 30mL (~1 oz) bottle. Even after applying 2 coats 45 mins apart per the detailer I spoke to. I watched a couple videos on applying it with the suede block to get an idea of how much to apply and that helped.

Hopefully Meguiar's offers a coating soon. I would not mind being a beta tester for it especially how close I am to their headquarters.

I'll be coating my Camaro first. I need to repaint some areas on my Grand Prix before I coat it. This will give me time to play around with washing and maintaining my dad's to get an idea of what kind of difference it is versus a sealant or wax.

That looks awesome Mike, nice work!

So you'll be coating the glass? I ask because I saw a post from you saying you're not impressed by glass coatings.

Also, a coating that's slicker than any sealant? Wow, slickness is generally not a coating's forte...

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Thanks. It took a little effort to find the right combo. But once I did it worked out very well. Patience has it's virtue. I think part of it is the engineering background kicking in with wanting to solve the problem.

When you do your brothers post some pics. I am a huge fan of the 4th gen f-body. Mine and this one have hard paint so the DAMF cutting discs are worth having. Hopefully your bro hooks you up with those pads.

Thanks. Yes I will be coating the glass. I was not impressed with how the water beads on the rear window and stays there instead of sheeting off. On the front glass I was hoping for a lower speed for it to sheet but the longevity and durability outweighs those little issues I have with it. It's the same issue as Sizzle Chest over on AGO. Could be just this glass coating that behaves this way. Plus I have to use this product up lol. I can't let it collect dust. UQW sheets off at a lower speed than this glass coating.

Hopefully this coating stays slick. We shall see after the cure period.

Re: 2002 Camaro Z28 Now Coated

I had the opportunity to wash it. It's been 2 weeks since the coating was applied. I used CarPro Reset to wash it. The coating on the paint and on the glass made it so easy to wash. Probably the easiest wash I have ever done. It is very hydrphobic. I will see how the coating holds up in the months to come. So far so good.

Here's a quick example of the beading as I was finishing up with the wash. Pretty tight beads. The sheeting is even better. I used a Metroblaster sidekick to dry it.

Nothing wants to stick to the paint.

                        Looks pretty cool.

Do you think the reload helped it behave like that?

I haven't topped it with anything and I won't be topping it. That's all coating. Reset is the shampoo for coatings.

Yeah, but was that filmed after you washed it?

I thought maybe the Reset left something behind to help...

                            ** My bad I meant "Reset" **

No problem. I figured you got them confused with each other. Yeah these were filmed after I had finished up.

Pulled from a CarPro's site and Detailed Image. According to these it leaves nothing behind. Kind of like Hyperwash which I will try next and alternate between the two when it needs a 2 bucket and D114 when it needs a rinseless.

                              CarPro Reset Auto Shampoo

CarPro Reset was formulated as the perfect partner to nanotechnology based sealants and coatings, with cleaning properties tailored to their unique needs. Utilizing Intelligent pH Surfactants, Reset breaks down road grime and traffic films with the power of an alkaline cleaner, whilst being as gentle on the surface as a pH-neutral shampoo. Afterwards Reset quickly rinses free from the surface, leaving behind no soap residues or interfering silicones, and restoring the beading and dirt releasing properties (The ‘Hydrophobic Effect’) of the surface to help maintain its protection. Combined with excellent lubrication, a strong foaming action for improved dirt suspension, and a high dilution ratio, this makes for a highly effective and economical wash. At the same time, Reset is almost entirely based upon naturally occurring, organic ingredients, making it as safe for the environment and for the user as it is for the vehicle. If dirt is hiding the beauty of your car or motorcycle, then you know that it is time for a Reset!
