  • Pictures from May 16 , 2015 Saturday Class

This Saturday we hosted Team Hybrid, a major SoCal car club that has been a huge part of the local car scene for many, many years. They always bring a highly enthusiastic group of car guys and this class was no exception.

Team Hybrid is well known for showing off some pretty radical rides. Looks like we may need to lower our parking lot for these guys!

Our demo car, brought in by one of the students, was this 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe with, um, problems. Lots of swirls and scratches in the hood and throughout the body.

After the usual classroom program it's out to the garage for some hands on work.

We cleaned the light dust off the surface and then set to claying the hood.

Yep, this car needed to be clayed all right!

Notice how the hood slopes downward and away from you here? We see too many new users of the DA polisher hold the tool so stiffly that they fail to follow the contours of the car. Instead, they never move from the angle they started with, and as they get closer to the front of the car the pad starts to lift off the paint. This is really the same as tipping the tool up on an angle when working on a flat surface - the pad simply stops rotating, and that's not a good thing.

Here we're using Ultimate Compound with a thin foam cutting disc on the MT300.

We follow up with Ultimate Polish on a thin foam polishing disc to refine the surface and increase gloss.

Out in the sunshine a little side by side of our test spot and the difference is dramatic. Remember, this is just an initial test spot of UC/UP - no wax, no extra steps to perfect the paint. If this is where start from, it's a pretty fantastic start!

Time to put the students to work.

With multiple MT300s on hand, we could get more than one person working on the hood at once. Team Hybrid teamwork!!

Art Hernandez, a regular at our TNOG sessions, decided to come down for the class and proved to be a big help when multiple users were on the car at once. Thanks Art!!!

Team polishing to refine the surface.

Last step, wax application. This step is a major departure in technique from compounding and polishing so we like to demo it separately from the other work.

Wiping off the wax should be a piece of cake, not a major chore.
