  • Wohoo, new pads & backing plate

Well, I got my new pads and 5" backing plate today. I went with Meguiar's Soft Buff, thin & flat pads. There was a discount code for 15% off any order over $60, which brought my total to $68.99 shipping incl. I was gone all day and when the wife handed me the box, I couldn't believe how small it was. I thought surely all 6 pads AND the backing plate *can't* be in there. Well, they all were. I was surprised at just how small (compared to my old pads) these things are, my old pads are GIANTS compared to these in thickness AND diameter. I'll have to measure because I don't remember (getting older *****) how big my old pads are, but I'm willing to bet they are at least 7.5" and 2 - 3 times as thick.

All I need to do now is go to Wally World and pick up some UC/UP and I'll be ready to detail the inlaw's cars, a silver Chevy 1500 (with cap and steel rack) and a strawberry Ford Edge

Nice. I've just used the new pads on a full detail and I liked them a lot. Let us know how they work out for you.

You think there'll be a big difference going from a gigantic pad to these 5" pads (handling-wise) with the PC?

You should notice a big difference. I have only used these new pads and 5.5" LC pads and this size pad is ideal for the PC's power.

I have photos in this thread using these with a PC. The red car I used the new MT300 DA.

These new thin discs should transform your PC - smoother operation, faster cut in one quick change of pad technology.

Re: Wohoo, new pads & backing plate

After using the Lake country Hydro pads, I have been hooked on using thinner pads. Now that Meguiar's has answered by request. I may have to try these pads in the future.

I also like the LC hydo tech pads. The only downside to them is their durability.

First Post . Few Questions if you don't mind....

                  1. Have you tried the HydroTechs on the MT 300 with the new Megs 5" BP? If so....

                  2. Is the hook n loop (Velcro) compatible with these? Or a Bad Idea?

                  3. Generally, How does the finish compare (Already know the "cut" comparison): Burgundy ---- Crimson, Yellow ----- Tangerine, Black ----- Crimson ??

                  4. Is the Meg's Yellow and Black discs Closed-Cell? (Only found "Officially" that the Burgundy is Closed Cell).

Currently in the market for a Polisher...and the MT 300 is calling me. I'd like to keep it to one machine. I'm hesitating somewhat, but not solely due to, the flexibility on using a smaller BP (Meg's 3"....2 7/8) and no 3" New foam disc lineup...for tight areas (Pillars et al). However, there are 3" LC HT's and others....hence the question concerning hook n loop compatibility. <---- Many people (other forums) are saying this isn't a big deal....but I'm thinking it is.

Understand the MT 300 and the 5" BP were designed for each other but from what I've researched some are using the Megs 3" BP (Obviously this will be done on lower speeds) and Pads (type rarely mentioned) and saying that there is some extra vibration... but workable.

Appreciate any feedback you can offer.

I'll save the other 3624 questions for another time

I have the previous backing plate that came with the microfiber system. The LC HT's work fine with it.

                    2. Is the hook n loop (Velcro) compatible with these? Or a Bad Idea?

It should be. Hopefully Michael Stoops can answer this for you.

                    3. Generally, How does the finish compare (Already know the "cut" comparison): Burgundy ---- Crimson, Yellow ----- Tangerine, Black ----- Crimson ??

I only have the tangerine HT's. Cut is pretty much the same as is the finish. I do like the thinner foam pad from Meguiar's. Makes for putting less pressure for me to put down on the machine. The burgundy cutting disc is great. It leaves a great finish and cuts great.

                    4. Is the Meg's Yellow and Black discs Closed-Cell? (Only found "Officially" that the Burgundy is Closed Cell).

This is a Michael Stoops question

I don't use the MT300 with small pads. I dedicated my PC 7424XP for small pad usage. I can't comment on how the machine handles 3" pads. I use the 3" HT's on my PC with a LC 3" backing plate. I also use the Meguiar's 3" microfiber cutting discs if I need them. The Meguiar's small pads that come with the power system fit a 4" backing plate. The pad face is larger than 3".

The MT300 is a great tool. It's a definite upgrade from the PC. The ergonomics are better as is the vibration. With the PC I would get the tingly feeling in my hands after hours of usage. Not so with the MT300.

Finish of Megs Soft Discs compared to HydroTechs? If they "collectively" finish as well...then I may just roll with them. I don't want to be playing the "try different pads" game and would much prefer to stay with a single "simple" line since I'm just a glorified weekend warrior and not starting a business.

Re: Wohoo, new pads & backing plate

The MT300 works great with 3" pads, especially when you remove the D handle completely. The shroud around the counterweight is smaller than that of more traditional DA polishers so it allows you to get in even tighter under mirrors and around edges. That said, we know a lot of folks who upgraded to an MT300 have set up their previous DA as a dedicated 3" pad tool, much like The Guz describes.

I only have the W67DA backing plate which is the previous backing plate to the black one. It was designed to work with the microfiber pads but I didn't see a need to get the black one as it works well with the new foam pads and the hydrotech's. I've seen and held the black backing plate in person and it looks to be built really well. The benefit of the black one is the white marking on it already.

I only have the tangerine hydrotech's. The reason I got them is because Autogeek substituted them for me when the white flat pads were out of stock. So I still have a couple of the flat pads still around and I just prefer the thinness of the Meguiar's pads. They are even thinner than the hydrotech's.

I have used other compounds and polishes with the Meguiar's thin pads and I had no issues.

You can always convert your GG6 to a dedicated 3" pad machine. It gets bothersome changing out backing plates.

Thanks appreciate the clarification sir, (I foresee The MT 300 in my immediate future ). This then leads to a few more questions....

                              1. Backing Plates and Pads. From what I've read, the Meg's DBP5 and DBP3 have a specific "hook n loop" that is designed not only for the MF Pads but the Discs as well. If I were to purchase 3"/5.5" LC HydroTechs and marry them with the respective Meg's BP am I going to run into issues?

My plan was to go with the: Burgundy Meg's, LC Tangerine and Crimson in my initial Line-up....a friend suggested the two LC Pads for their quality of cut and finish (he admittedly had no experience with Meg's Yellow and Black soft discs).

Just trying to do my due diligence, especially now with Pads/BP since I've decided to go with the MT 300, so I don't get into the Pad "Jumping and Buying game" as this can be a somewhat expensive endeavor...and I'm not trying to start a business.

I suppose this leads the door wide open for you to state the Case for The Yellow/Black in lieu of the LC Tangerine and Crimson.

If they are in the Universal ZipCode of D-114/D-156 (Detailing Hall of Fame...absolute Wizardry IMO) in quality, then my queries are all but moot.

Your input will not go without serious consideration.

                              Thanks, John
