I've seen and held the black backing plate in person and it looks to be built really well. The benefit of the black one is the white marking on it already.

I only have the tangerine hydrotech's. The reason I got them is because Autogeek substituted them for me when the white flat pads were out of stock. So I still have a couple of the flat pads still around and I just prefer the thinness of the Meguiar's pads. They are even thinner than the hydrotech's.

I have used other compounds and polishes with the Meguiar's thin pads and I had no issues.

You can always convert your GG6 to a dedicated 3" pad machine. It gets bothersome changing out backing plates.

    Thanks for your input.

I don't have the GG 6" and would prefer to stick with one machine....for now.

The Megs Burgundy Foam Disc is closed cell? Hmm, that explains why it's not as easy as the flat pad to clean with just running water.. But then again it even feels like it's built powerful unlike other pads. I should also do a better job of cleaning as soon as I'm done with em.
