  • MT300 Technique

I used the MT300 at 3000rpm (3800 was out of control) to apply ULW. It's a beast. There was a lot of splatter and I found it difficult to spread evenly let alone thinly. Except for having to squeeze the slippery black pad, it's much easier and better by hand. Putting an X of ULW on the pad, starting the MT300 on the body and making overlapping strokes as per the instructions didn't really do the job. And if you linger too long trying to get it thin, the MT300 turns the ULW into whipped cream. I'm obviously doing something wrong.

Would love to hear your technique and see a video of it getting a nice even thin coat of ULW on.

Sounds like you are using too much product if you are just applying a wax, and might be a touch fast on the speed as well.

When applying a liquid wax type of product by machine I will only apply a couple small drops to the pad, dab the pad on the paint in a couple spots and spread on a low speed. You are just trying to spread the wax, not work it like a polish.

It could be there was too much product but it was what the product videos show. But 3000rpm is as slow as the MT300 goes. I'm beginning to think it's no good for applying wax.

I don't have an MT300 to do a test with. But my PC at about that speed range is fine for applying wax.

The amount of product you used I could probably do an entire car with, possibly with some left over.

I want to be clear, I put an X of ULW on a 6" pad and that should last the whole car? It didn't even do a door before I was just polishing the paint. This is why I would love to see a Meguiars video using an MT300 for wax. Controlling a 3000rpm DA was a workout.

This is exactly how it should be done regardless of which DA is being used. I have the MT300 and 3800 opm's is about speed 3 1/2 - 4 on the PC. Still good enough to apply wax. Dab the product as mentioned and you should be fine.

I do the same when applying by hand and dab on the paint and then work it in.

Ultimate Liquid Wax, I use two or three pea size drops, and I can usually get a few panels out of that.

The innitial X ammount of product is mainly meant to prime your pad. Do a small section with it, after that you'll only have to apply 3 pea size dots and be able to cover quite a large area with a thin coat of wax. Remember that a thin coat is ideal and all that's needed.

But ehh what do I know, I preffer applying wax by hand. Lol.

@Eldorado2K: Thanks for the detailed explanation. My all accounts, the MT300 was supposed to enable thin. What do you use to apply by hand? I find the black foam that comes with the ULW hard to grip after a couple panels.

                    Re: MT300 Technique

The MT300, or any other DA on the market including tall stroke tools like the Rupes 21 or a direct drive, forced rotation tool like the Flex 3401, are all capable of spreading a thin layer of any liquid or paste wax with ease. It sounds like something is definitely amiss with, and we hate to say it..........your technique. Tell you what, we'll do a quick video in the next day or so on applying wax with the MT300 and post it up right here.

How much product do you use when you apply by hand?. You should be able to get it laid down thin with or without a machine.
At 1:18 in this video you can see only a dot is applied to the applicator pad.

Great Michael. Thanks. I am rooting for it being my technique. Priming the pad is a part of it I think. Also, technique for using the DA on vertical surfaces would be good along with dealing with creases in sheet metal. Then, once the pad is primed, how much product should be added and best way to start the next session without splatter or over applying.

In the past, I used 1/3 of a bottle on my BMW 5 series GT when I did it by hand. Someplace, I watched a Meguiars video where they put an X of product on the pad. Did you mean to include a link to a video?

1/3 of a bottle sounds like a lot of product. You should only need about 1-2 oz to cover an entire car. Thin is in.

1/3 bottle is an estimate and it was thin. This thread isn't about believing thin is in, this is about getting thin using the MT300. My attempts at thin with the MT300 amounted to application then buffering all in the course of a swipe. Hence the request for video.
