  • M40 vs D170

What is the intended purpose of M40? The product size is so small I am left wondering. It seems like it would be ideal for cleaning and protecting tires.

I am looking for, hopefully, a single product that I can protect tires and leave a matt finish and would do something similar for black/dark exterior trim. And may be something to protect interior plastics and vinyl less the clear plastics.

D170 is not a cleaner but diluted will protect and provide a matt finish on tires. And it comes in gallon containers. I am assuming it would work on exterior black trim, as well.

Both are water based dressings and, as such, neither is going to be especially durable as an exterior trim protectant. Let's face it, basic water based dressings tend to wash away in water. That said, M40 is available by the gallon but it is intended to be used straight. D170 can be diluted in varying degrees, altering the gloss level. M40 is hugely popular in pro circles as a matte tire dressing, rubber trim dressing, engine bay dressing, and even for light duty interior cleaning/dressing in one step.

Thanks Michael, what would you recommend for this troublesome exterior trim? I have a Rav4 that has near-black bumpers and near-black plastic/vinyl trim around the wheel openings. The most I've used in the past has been ArmorAll. But it is consistently grey. It sounds like neither the M40 or D170 would meet my needs or produce results that would last very long. Thanks.

You might want to consider ultimate black. You have the lotion version in the little black bottle or the new aerosol version. The aerosol version is more durable. Just be sure to mask off any areas if using the aerosol version to avoid overspray on the painted surfaces.

Thank Guz. I found another string on the aerosol version. Looks pretty ideal for what I need to do. Prep was said to be APC which I am assuming to be all purpose cleaner of some non-specified brand. New here so the acronyms are new to me.
Also, is this stuff some sort of "paint"? In other words, could it be used for non-black plastic. Does it somehow restore the pigmintation that is/was their or does it replace it. I have a plastic spare tire cover that is partially near black and partially dark grey. It sounds like I wouldn't use this stuff on the grey part, correct?

Here is my review on it.

APC is All Purpose Cleaner. I have D104 APC+ from the detailer line. It is now discontinued but D101 is the other APC currently offered in the detailer line. It's worth the investment along with the spray bottle for it.

This is a clear coating. It is not any type of paint or dye type product. I've only used it on black plastic but it should be fine on grey plastic. I believe Eldorado2k used it on a Tacoma.
