  • New DA Thin Foam Discs Review

I took the opportunity to try out the new thin foam pads today. This is the first time I have used them. I have an aftermarket hood on my car so the factory hood has been sitting in the garage for a couple years collecting dust. It made a good candidate to test the pads on. I used the 5" pads with a PC7424XP.

This is what the hood looked like. It had swirls all over it.

    Here's a closer view.

First thing I did was do a rinseless wash with D114 and then clay. I don't know when or how long it's been since this thing was clayed. This is the kind of gunk I was pulling out on the clay bar. I used M34 and a clay magic clay bar. It picked up more surface contamination versus the fine grade nanoskin sponge.

There have been lots of questions regarding whether these pads fit the W67DA backing plate. Well I am happy to say that they do with no issues.

I used D300 with the DFC5 burgundy cutting disc and M205 on the DFP5 yellow polishing disc. Here is a 50/50 after using the cutting disc. I made 4 passes with D300.

Here's a final shot after following up with M205 on a yellow polishing disc. This hood had no gloss what so ever to it as seen in the first photo. I'll let the photo speak for itself.

My final thoughts on using these. I was impressed with them. I noticed that the combo with D300 finished LSP ready. Of course the hood is a light color so it's harder to see DA haze. But the correction was fantastic. Pretty close to the correction offered by the microfiber cutting discs. There are some deeper rids that the microfiber cutting disc could probably remove easily. But the thin foam cutting disc corrects very well. I was also using it with a PC7424XP and although it's not the most powerful of the DA's it sure did give great results. The polishing disc worked really well with M205. I do recommend that the pads are cleaned a little more often than a typical foam pad since these can load up quicker. It took me a little time to adjust to the thinner pad but it's not a big learning curve. I typically use Lake Country foam pads (flat pads and the thinner hydrotech pads) which work really well and are my favorite pads. The Meguiar's pads are right up there in terms of performance to the Lake Country pads. I do prefer a thinner pad to take advantage of the tools power. Overall these foam discs worked very well and should be considered by anyone when looking for pads.

        Thanks for the review, Guz!

I'm definitely going to pick up some of these.

Have you used D302 on foam yet?

I have not. I do have it. I guess the question is what are you expecting D302 to do? IT doesn't have any correction ability compared to M205 but if you are looking to add a little more gloss then it's been stated on here that it works well with a finishing pad.

In addition to this review, I finally used the new discs with the MT300. They are a great compliment to each other. I was using the cutting discs at 5800 OPM's on the MT300.

This hood was done with D300 on the new foam cutting disc. On this paint, this combination finished very well. I could have skipped polishing.

Rear quarter hit with the same combo

Water spots were easily removed with the same pad and liquid combo.

Trunk lid with the same D300 + cutting disc combo

It even worked well with M101 on a foam cutting disc as I had to get pretty aggressive to get these defects out.

Here's the driver side fender with the same M101 + cutting disc combo

I did try the polishing discs on the doors with some polish of another brand and they worked very well. Same goes for the finishing discs which is what I used on the rest of the car with the same polish.

I do have to note that these discs are easy to clean. I let them soak over night in some pad cleaner and they cleaned up so easily. I didn't have to work as much to remove any residue compared to the Lake Country Hydro Tech pads that I also use. These discs are pretty durable.

What kind of pad cleaner do you use? I used the thin yellow foam on my car and after one time use the pad has a black tint to it. I can't seem to get it looking as close to new as I would like.

I usually use APC but I ended up picking this up after some good reviews and it worked good. Let them soak over night.

Just curious how d302 performs compared to 205 and Ultimate polish all things being equal.

I get a suprising amount of swirl removal with Ultimate Polish on a foam polishing pad, and even more with a microfiber pad. I'm guessing d302 doesn't have the potency of UP. This allows the possibility of an even finer grade polish, should the situation warrant it.

Nice review, Michael, thanks for taking the time to put it together.

The new DFC5 burgundy foam cutting disc is fast becoming the go to for a lot of people due to it's great cutting ability and fantastic finishing. We were using it at SEMA to pull 3000 grit sanding marks out of Mercedes Ceramiclear paint with just D300!

I got a sample of this in an order a while back. It is pretty awesome.

                      That's awesome news, Mr. Stoops!

I certainly plan on ordering some in the near future.

Specifically on the burgundy pad - I'm curious as to the foam composition. Is it an open cell design? How firm is it in relation to the yellow?

I used to use the burgundy pad on a rotary back in the 90's. It will be interesting to see how these compare.

@Vietnik. I experienced the same thing this past weekend when I used a brand new polishing disc to apply D151. Rinsing the pad in the sink didn't quite clean it all off.. But then I decided to take it outside and use the spray nozzle on jet setting.

It cleaned up with that stonger jet of water.

You could use it with a finishing pad as final polish say after M205 or UP.

No problem. These discs are great. I heard all the podcast interviews with you, Jason Rose, Kevin Brown and Mike Pennington stating how durable the pads are and how great they correct and finish. Also how easy they clean up. I'm a believer.

It is much firmer than the yellow pad and it feels quite a bit more coarse to the touch as well. But don't let that scare you off - it's a total rethink of any of our previous burgundy foam pads, which have gone through a few iterations since the 90's. This particular foam is designed to run cooler, cut faster, and finish nicer than ever before. Harder paints love it and with something like M100 used to remove even heavy swirls, you can often go straight to wax. Personally, I've used this new cutting disc with White Wax as a one step on some softer paints that hazed badly with microfiber discs, but this combo was just incredible in those situations.

Sounds like a real gem of a pad. I'm looking forward to putting the entire line into use.

This burgundy pad is the core of my interest though.
