  • Pictures from February 28, 2015 Saturday Open Class

The forecast may have said rain, which might have been the cause for fully half the signups to no-show, but Saturday morning was clear and dry and we had a great time!

Following the classroom portion of the day, we gathered in the garage for some hands on work. First up, however, was cleaning the car with D114 Rinse Free Express Wash. That removed the surface dirt from our demo car, revealing the true nature of the paint under the dirt.

10 years old and not taken care of at a high level, this Honda Accord was riddled with swirls, water spots, etchings and deeper scratches.

We broke out the C2000 Professional Mild Detailing Clay since the paint was quite heavily contaminated.

Once the paint was clean, it was time to grab the MT300 DA buffer and our new DA Thin Foam Discs.

The paparazzi was out in force on this day! Ultimate Compound on a DFC5 foam cutting disc for major defect removal.

We then followed up with Ultimate Polish on a DFP5 foam polishing disc.

We then demonstrated the DAMF System. Priming the pad is critically important before you start correcting with the DAMF System, and a bondo spreader works great for this!

Left side is after foam disc application, right side is after microfiber. The DAMF System, being a bit more aggressive, left a tiny bit more haze on this paint, which can be seen in this image immediately to the right of the tape line. The new DFC5 foam cutting disc performed beautifully on this paint and would be our choice overall for this car.

Hands on time for the students, starting with the car owner. As we so often see with a new user, the tool is held in a near death grip and the user's body is very tense. This leads to poor technique as it's hard to keep the pad in contact with the paint since being tense locks up the upper body and you tend to pendulum from the waist. This is not only physically tiring, but you end up losing contact with the paint as you move from one side of your work area to another.

Besides, as soon as you loosen up, things become a lot more fun!

    Team paint polishing!

The new MT300 DA Polisher in action. So smooth, so balanced, and it cuts like crazy!!

The group may have been a bit smaller than we expected today, but the enthusiasm was packed to the max!!!

Thanks Mike for the great class. Duy and I both learned a lot. On Sunday, we went ahead, washed my car and even waxed it afterwards.

Great work and write up. I have a question for Mike, what hand held light was used to highlight the swirls?

I was using my Inova LED flashlight. I'm not sure of the exact model or specs off the top of my head, but it's quite similar to this one available at Amazon That one is described as being a dual mode light, but mine is not. I got mine at CES a few years ago so the exact unit may no longer be made. I'll see if I can find the specific model number and specs for you in the next day or so.
