  • Just got this astro cargo van to go mobile again

Here's the start of going back into mobile detailing, just picked this Astro Cargo van up a couple days ago and been stripping everything but that dash out and thoroughly cleaning and waxing the inside. Here's what me and my little boy has got done so far. Still alot of work to get done but will be up and running in just a couple more days or so. There's some rough places, couple dent's and some surface rust here and there that I'm going to get as soon as Everything is safe and ready for road work.Have alot of Exterior polishing and coating to be done as well as my logo and graphics, Between doing mechanical and stripping everything as I go to work on and/or clean.

I've been searching and studying, plus my past mobile detail truck I have alot of ideals and learning from a lot of pics of some detail vans and trailers that have some great equipment but everything's in the middle and really don't see much room for any products and to me looks like a waste of space so maybe this can help or give others ideals from my van/set-up or if anyone has any ideals or see something I need to do or should/could do for the better, please fell free.

Just have only had a couple days and in between working on and trying to clean up the mess I'm trying to get everything set-up and use every inch of space wisely because I like to carry everything possible. My thinking is "better to have and not need, then to need and not have" So I want to be ready, and since I live around the tri-state I'm 45 minutes from the Ohio and West Virginia line so I will be covering it as well.

Here's some before and after pics of what I'm starting with and will be following up as I go to show me turning a nasty old Cargo van into a hopefully Awesome mobile detail rolling billboard with just about everything needed to do it all and will sometime having a 35 to 50 Gal plastic water tank and a huge power Inverter so I can be completely mobile!

The guy I got this from said he was a painter and went to car dealerships and did a lot of their touch up's and as you can see, he wasn't to neat with it. Going to be alot of scrubbing and cleaning to remove it all but I think I got it figured out and been doing some testing here and there.

This is between the seat's and I just couldn't handle riding in this van the way it is!

Me and my little boy first stripped everything but the dash out and got ready for alot of cleaning and scrubbing!

After using D101 @10:1 and lots of terry towels and 0000 steel wool we got about 90% cleaned wiped down and some D156 Spray Wax. Will be going after the edge at the doors and bumper plastic to also remove all the paint. Just wanted to hurry and get it cleaned, waxed and back together that night.

The floor mats were in pretty bad and nasty shape. Used Purple power full strength and a stiff bristle boat hull brush with lots of scrubbing.

After and no dressing were applied just a clean factory appearance.

    D101 @ 10:1 and D156

    Before

After, Still going to go over the front seat's with my Mytee 8070 extractor just to make sure all the dust and stains are gone. And at this point still haven't cleaned the door panels.

Before, sorry picture isn't good quality, still had all my LED lights on and was to much for my camera at this angle.

    After

    Before

    After.

Up until this point I got most of the inside cleaned and smelling alot better, Now this is the only real mod I've done to go mobile with my cargo shelf in and bolted down, it's out of a E150 cargo van but I had to do some cutting and filing down to get it to go back far enough with the side wall of my smaller astro, but offers alot of space for my cleaners/polishes/waxes & coatings plus about 10 to 11 gallons of my APC's, cleaners, D151 PRC, waxes, D106 &D116 and most used products so I won't run out when I'm out. Here's what I did last night and some this morning. This shelf is going to help greatly with how I like to be loaded down with products and my machines and to use up all usable space

Left just enough room for my Electric Pressure Washer to fit at the very end and going to be using a small ratcheting strap to secure it. Will be butting my Mytee Extractor up on the other side of my shelf and ratcheting it to the floors or sides. Have more room for my shop vac, 12'X12' EZ-UP, my steamer, looking for a smaller hose reel for my water hose, my plateform ladder, my small craftsmen air compressor will be strapped across from my PSI Washer were the jack was mounted, my 5 buckets, fold up tables, my Flex 3401 is in a bag behind my driver seat and my 7424 & 3'' GG Da's will be behind the passenger seat. Still looking for 2 more shelf's I can bolt up higher to carry ll my pads and micro fiber towels in sealed containers and to make due and get all the usable space from this small Astro van!

Will be posting more pics of my mobile van time to time, thanks for looking.

That van looks in pretty decent shape and you have the inside looking great. Won't take much to get the outside looking nice too. And has lots of room for advertising on the side if you choose to do that.

Wow! That looks like a lot of work but you're powering through very nicely!

I'm betting the van is thanking you for removing all those years of crud!

Thanks exploreco, yeah starting to think about my design and how to go about applying my logo across the hood and how to make my design jump out at you on both sides and make you want to look at it.

Appreciate that Select! Really haven't done much of cleaning, just putting the trim piece on and the console. Been working on a wire problem all day. Had plan's on washing, decontaminating and a complete paint correction over the entire van but that will have to wait for another week or so. Still have to remove all the paint at the back door entry and take the plastic bumper cover off to remove all the paint as well. Still a ton of work to be done but hopefully everything is ok and just something very minor I'm looking over.

Thanks Guz appreciate that! If I can hurry up and get this mechanical problem fixed I am going to make this white paint have an Amazing Reflective Gloss!! And I can't wait to get it finished either! At first I didn't care much for the rims because of the front rims but the more I look at the back rims which isn't as nasty as the front ones, I'm going to be removing and doing a full correction on them as well and also apply GTechniq's C5 wheel armor on for protection. I hope to have this ol' van looking as good as a new one in the next couple weeks.

Thanks again guys appreciate the kind words and taking the time to check it out, Will keep posting my progress on here as I can.

Re: Just got this astro cargo van to go mobile again

I have 2 Astro Vans set up for mobile detailing. Overall I think they are great. Here are a couple things I'd recommend.

                      1. Use the backdoors to store your spray bottles, a closet shoe organizer works well for this if you don't want to buy the metal shelf
                      2. If you are putting a water tank in the van, get it as close to directly over the rear axle as possible and tilt it a little toward the drain hole.
                      3. Go ahead a buy extra exterior door handles, they are going to break
                      4. Get some sort of storage to hang from the ceiling, I found these upside down T-shaped hooks at Home Depot (I couldn't find a link). I store a pop-up canopy and a small ladder there
                      5. Unplug all the interior ceiling lights, I ran my battery down a few times before I figured out leaving the door open while detailing a car leaves those lights on

If you have any questions feel free to send me a message, I've been using these vans for years.

                        1) That's the best way I have found for helping me make use out of every bit of space usable and neat! Out of all the detail vans I've been looking at and for any ideals I like, I found that Detail by M has a great system fixed for his back doors for spray bottles and dispensing bottles. And going to make or have a shelf designed about like he has and work it into my set-up.
                        2) Hopefully I can get a 35 or so gallon square plastic tank and going to do as you mentioned about putting over the axle, but not in the middle of van where it will be in my way and taking up to much space. Going to put as close to the rear tire wheel well as possible or have a tank holder made out of thin flat steel or aluminum and get it off the floor and over rear tire wheel well just enough and fasten to side too.
3)Yeah the back one is broke and a couple more are acting a little funny!
                        4) Great Ideal, Thanks! Appreciate that.
                        5) Another great idea! Run into the same problem when me and my little boy was cleaning. Have a headlight problem right now! (hope it's the headlight switch) and for some reason my theft security won't let my van stay running, will start, run for a few seconds then just die? Have done the reset feature 4 times now, bought a new battery, rechecked all connectors, and went over everything I have done 4 or 5 times and making sure nothing is out of place, but nothing. Spent the last 2 days working on this problem and running out of patients! I need this thing on the road making some money!!! Have a mechanic coming down with a Snap-On Solus Ultra Scanner and going to see what I've done or what a guy done checking why my headlights went off and not coming on?

Re: Just got this astro cargo van to go mobile again

OK guys been working the last 3 days trying to get my headlight problems fixed as well as the brakes. Had a mechanic come down and work on it, got to were it would stay running and when it did the headlights would go off?

I was beginning to think that my sweet deal I got was a bad burn! But my guy come through for me and it was alot of wire and relay chasing. Already had it out for my first mobile and love it! Now I've got another one to do in the morning and been talking to a couple mobile guys and getting some ideal on how to get the most out of my space without being cluttered up. Now I still need to go buy some more brackets to hang both of my 12x12 EZ-UP's I will be carrying as well as a 6000 watt power Invertor and a 35 gallon water tank.

Think I have alot of my space figured out but will just have to wait for everything and then alot of putting in for test fits and then removing and refitting. But anyway 6:00 comes early and here's my set-up right now but still cluttered up and waiting for my other shelf to hang on the back passenger wall for more of my gallons of Meguiars products.

Still have more small adjustments to make and when I get my other shelf and brackets should have alot more room! I think this small Astro just might be all I need to be completely mobile and carrying just about everything I need. If anyone has any ideals or just a opinion for me to try something to get more space please feel free to comment. Thanks for looking!

A little before and after. Finally got an hour free to wash this thing after 2 weeks, couldn't take it any longer! Here's when I first brought it home.

And after about an hour or so washing it, and about 20 minutes just on the front rim to remove all the baked on brake dust.

                              Before

                              After

                              Close-up of the rim

Lots of wheel brightener and some 0000 steel wool soaked in soapy water
