  • Best compound/polish/wax/pad for a black acura TSX?

My good friend has a black Acura TSX with like a blue metal flake to it and it needs a detail, desperately!

He did not take care of the paint at all and it is horribly swirled and scratched everywhere. It will need some major love but haven't worked with Acura paints before and considering its black, for those of you that have worked on these brand of vehicles which product do you suggest would yield the best results?

I know each vehicle is different and test spots are always the way to go, but would like to at least have an idea of a good possible starting point from advice of you out there who have done this...

Also my friend is on a tight budget, so cost is very much an issue, so least amount of steps possible would be best (he's not expecting show car results) but I still plan to do the best I can for him & remove as much of those nasty swirls/scratches as possible.

So which would be the best combo of compound/polish/wax, (pad color) choice you all think will yield the best results?

    D151?
    #66?
    Microfiber system cut and finish?
    Microfiber system cut and polish?
(cut & finish pad) (x-tra cut pad?)
    M100, M205?

I have Lake Country CCS pads & a porter cable 7424 xp and a flex 3401 vrg along with the above Meguiars line of products...

    Any others???

You've got a few different options available to you, which is great and will likely help you out quite a bit here. The thing is, though, that it's extremely difficult to say "use this, this and this" and everything will come out the way you want it to. Why? Several reasons: 1) we don't really know for sure just how far you want to take this paint, 2) we haven't been able to evaluate the surface to see just how bad it really is, 3) having never worked on this exact car we don't how the paint will respond to input.

What we can offer is a starting point, and this to do a test spot just as you should do on any car you touch for the first time. Honda/Acura paint has a tendency to be on the softer side so we wouldn't be surprised to find that the initial cutting process with microfiber pads hazes that paint. From you description, which sounds pretty bad honestly, and the list of products you have we'd be inclined to think that M100 on a microfiber cutting pad would do the trick, but it might make some haze. That haze will be easy to remove with M205 on one of your LC polishing or finishing foam pads, and then wax it. But you might also find that D151 on a microfiber cutting pad is all you need for a great All-in-One. Unless, of course, the microfiber hazes the paint. Then maybe D151 on a foam polishing pad with the Flex. Or maybe.....

You've got a lot of options and, huge bonus, you've actually got the car in front of you. So do a few test spots on the hood, side by side, and see which process gives you the best balance of final finish and time required.

Oh, and take pictures. Lots of pictures. Then come back and post your work for everyone else to see!!

Ok cool thanks for the response Mike! Yea I know test spots are key for any car but I just didn't know if Acura used softer or harder paints mainly.

Do you know of any type of paint manufacturer "softer-to-harder paint guide" that maybe shows an average of which brands of vehicles have softer or harder paints that maybe a pro detailier has complied who has worked on all brands over the many years?
I know Porche is usually in many cases a softer paint for one, but not sure which others are in the "softer" paint categories which actually haze up like you said the Honda/Acura paint might do...

Those are some good suggetions, thank you. I didn't even consider the D151 with a microfiber, that's a really good idea actually I thought it was mainly for foam pad use. With D151 as an AOI with a microfiber cutting pad if it hazes the paint would it be good to follow up with the MF polishing pad with D151 or does the D301 finishing wax for the microfiber system finish off better?

Also in addition to these waxes as finishing off the paint, do you know would something like the Optimum spray wax (which I also have) work on top of the D151 or D301 and still adhere to it considering that the D151 has waxing agents in it? I have some Optimum as an extra coat of protection for some cases I like to use... I also usually use the Meguiars D156 as a maintenance wax after washes that stuff works great. It smells really good too! lol
