  • Paint defect(s)

Hello All. My name is Tom Chiofolo. My introduction is going to be a bit different then you are probably accustomed to. I recently had a custom steel bicycle fabricated for me by Dave Anderson in St. Paul, MN. He is a talented and customer oriented fabricator who built and outfitted my bike. I received the bicycle in early June. I noticed only this two Sunday's ago, after a colder then usual morning ride, and in direct sunlight, what appeared to be what I thought was water stains or smudges on the frame. When I attempted to buff them out, it became clear they were beneath the clear coat. They look like holograms, or lightening bolts or thicker spider webs and appear on alomost all the tubes. Dave Anderson requested that I ship at least the frame back so he can trouble shoot what is causing the aforementioned defects and will of course strip and repaint the frame. I am loathe to have to ship it back but will do so if need be. Dave has told me to try Scratch X as that will sometimes correct beneath surface swirls. The bike is almost entirely House of Kolor Midnight Blue Candy with some stripes in HOK Kosmos Red. I cannot post pics of the defects from work, but will do so later at home to aid you rendering any helpful opinions. I look forward to your shared opinions.

Yes, pics would definitiely help. He's right though, ScratchX could well do the job. Unfortunately there's no way of knowing for sure until you try, since there are many variables involved, including the hardness of the paint and the severity of the defects.

Do you have any Meguiars products on hand? If not, go out and grab some Ultimate Compound (UC) and Ultimate Polish (UP). Try the least agressive product (UP) on a test spot and see how that works. If you don't get the results you're after, step up to UC on a test spot, which should do the job. You may then need to follow up with UP to further refine the finish.

It may sound a bit weird for a bicycle, but I would then protect the finish with a good wax/sealant like Ultimate Wax (UW).

(btw, ScratchX sits in between UP and UC in terms of agressiveness, in case you already have some.)

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

I appreciate the prompt response. I have ordered a few products including Scratch X, Ultimate Polish and some Car Wash and Wax. I did not realize the polish was not wax. I will pick up some wax as well. Once I am home I will upload the pic of the defects. Thanks again.

        No problem.

You may want to pick up some foam applicator pads as well, if you don't already have some. They are a couple of bucks for a packet of 3-4...

For whatever reason, I cannot upload the picture. The file size is too big. If you would care to see the photo with the defect, could you please provide an email I can forward it to? Thanks.

Crop it and compress the photo. Then you can upload it.

                Looks like it's etched.

They really do look like holograms! I don't suppose he used a rotary buffer to finish up the paint?

If they are indeed rotary holograms, they shouldn't be too hard to remove...

                    Re: Paint defect(s)

Welcome to MOL, Tom! Sorry to hear about this paint issue on your new frame. As a former CAT III racer myself I understand the excitement of having a new frame built and painted just for you, so I also understand the frustration of having it arrive with this sort of paint defect. Looking at the image, however, these marks appear to be almost a stain of some sort rather than more typical holograms. The mark on the seat tube looks especially suspicious as holograms don't normally appear as this sort of blob. Nonetheless, we would still give ScratchX 2.0 a shot first, and then, if need be, send the frameset back and have it taken care of.

By the way, I love the chromed lugs against the dark colored paint. What's the tubeset on this frame? I still have all my bikes hanging in the garage, just sort of calling out to me to get back on them after all these years. Oh, and I just have to ask..... are you a Campagnolo or Shimano guy?
