  • No Ultimate Liquid Wax for me :(

I got the Ultimate Paste Wax instead

I went to Wally World and they were out of ULW and I was about to surrender when I found the LAST can of UPW I was also able to pick up new bottles of UQD and UQW

Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate today and I didn't get to try it out, but the weather has to be nice a few more times before the **** starts to fall.

You will like it. It was the first of the Ultimate wax I got and used it a bunch on mine and others cars. A little seems to go a long way and you can spread it nice and thin. It wasn't till just recently I bought the liquid to try out.

I don't mean to but can someone explain the advantage or disadvantage of liquid over past wax? All I can remember about paste wax was in the old days when my grandpa used to get out a can of paste wax and put it on and would put it on and it would be so thick and you couldn't hardly rub it off the car and it would be on the car for ever. lol. Just curious how one would put past wax on with a DA? I guess a 5 inch pad would probably fit in the can.

They are the same product. The difference being that the liquid version won't stain trim. Applying thin with both products is key.

Old school paste waxes, when applied really heavy, were indeed a pain to remove. But that wasn't really the fault of the wax - it was user error. In fact, to this day it's a very common user error. Most people tend to over use wax, and sometimes to crazy levels. Scooping paste wax out of a can is a sure sign of gross overuse, but so many people still do it this way. The reality is that a very little bit goes a very long way, and a single "scoop" is probably enough to cover an entire car. All you really need to do is lightly rub the applicator against the product in the can a bit, then spread it out onto the paint.

True - the liquid version won't stain trim while the ingredients that make a paste wax have the paste from will stain trim.
True - applying thin with either is most definitely the key!!!

As for applying paste wax with a DA, there are a few options:

          1) Mount a 3" backing plate to your DA and affix a 4" foam finishing pad to the plate. The 4" pad will fit perfectly in the can and pick up a small amount of wax ready to spread over an entire panel.
          2) Get a detailing paint brush with short bristles, or cut down a more standard paint brush so that the bristles are only about an inch long. Now brush this against the wax in the can and then paint the wax onto the face of the pad.
          3) Get a pair of microfiber gloves and, with some waxes, you can shake the entire contents of the can out and just rub it against the pad. This usually only works with waxes that come in smaller plastic jars - boutique waxes that cost quite a bit more than even Ultimate Wax - and you run the very real risk of contaminating the wax you've removed from the jar. The microfiber gloves are almost mandatory as that puck of wax is going to be a bit slippery and you really don't want to drop it. Honestly, we'd stick with options 1 or 2 above!!

All makes sense. I will stick to the liquid version. That is mostly what I have used in my life. Especially my latter life. Plus I will be purchasing the Mirror Glaze line next when I use up my Ultimate line.

You will grow to appreciate a paste wax. I was like you and prefered a liquid wax but have recently been going more towards the paste wax size. To be more clear I am refering to a carnauba based paste wax (ie M26 paste). You can still apply a paste wax by machine as Mike posted.

Re: No Ultimate Liquid Wax for me

I have always been a paste man, so naturally I bought the UPW first. After using the liquid version, I have found my new go-to.
After priming the pad I don't have to deal with spritzing the pad with detail spray and clumps. I also find it much easier to get a more even layer.
Then again, I never used a paste with a DA.
