I use it on my engine and my wheel wells, and I have used it on a tire or two. When I used it on the tire, I actually sprayed it on my brush and scrubbed the tire. I made sure I was very careful not to even let it get on my clear coated factory rims. It can stain them and also stain paint. I would NEVER let it touch my paint. I actually used it to get some oil stains off my neighbors driveway recently...that should give you your answer about your paint.
It's not going to hurt your paint. I degrease door jams, wheel wells, lower body panels and use it to clean out the gas caps. Pressure wash it off before it dries. It will strip off wax so don't let it on the paint for just a maintenance wash. I have done this for 5 years on hundreds of cars with no problems. I use it at a 10:1 dilution for these purposes and 4:1 for tires and engines.
It won't hurt the paint at all, but you do not want to let it self dry on paint.... or on anything else for that matter. Always make sure to rinse thoroughly with water after applying it to anything. In heavy concentration and with a long dwell time it can discolor some plastic trim, but that is extremely rare and, technically, it has to be used incorrectly for that to happen (ie, too strong of a concentration and too long a dwell time or actually allowing it self dry).
