  • Will ultimate compound remvoe 1500 grit wetsand scratches??

Ok well im curious to know if anyone has used a DA with ultimate compound to remove 1500 grit wet-sanding scratches. I have used m105 with a w8207 pad on the DA and it does remove the scratches on 4.5-5 speed setting with about 2-3 passes. Do you think ultimate compound will remove the scratches ?

I vaguely recall M101 on MF cuttings pads on DA to remove 2500 grit.... but I don't think I have seen anyone removing 1500 grit with UC.

We would not recommend UC for removal of sanding marks, especially on a DA. While the hardness of the paint is going to play a huge role here, the odds of UC pulling out 1500 grit sanding marks is very slim. If you're going to use a DA instead of a rotary, then the fastest way to remove sanding marks with that tool is to use either M105, M101 or M100 on a microfiber cutting disc. And it helps immensely to refine the sanding marks further than 1500 grit. A 3000 grit sanding mark will buff out much, much faster with that combo.

I repainted the front bumper on my 1994 F150 Lightning in 2013. I used Duplicolor Oxford White and applied three coats primer and four coats paint. I decided to skip the clear coat, and removed the 2500 grit wet sanding marks, I used UC with a Meg's red pad and my G110v2 DA. I am not saying it was the perfect tool for the job, but it did remove all wet sanding marks. I then went over the bumper with an LC white pad with Scratch X. I changed pads, applied UP and sealed it with Duragloss 105.

I would not recommend this for a full vehicle repaint, but on a bumper with single stage paint, it worked out well.

You said you didn't or you skipped clear coat ? If the paint it a base coat you need laquare , on solids it's just the colour and that's it but with base coat 2 stage you need laquare

I intentionally skipped the clear coat. I performed the work at home, in my garage. It was a really humid year, and I was afraid the clear coat wouldn't adhere properly. It is a temporary solution for now. I was tired of the rock chips in my front metal bumper, this has allowed me to drive the truck this summer. It is a weekend warrior and not a daily driver, that gets parked in an enclosed garage each night.

I'm not sure if the UC would take 2500 grit scratches out of clear coat, but it worked well in my situation. The bumper will eventually be powder coated. Until that time, I can drive the truck and not have to look at the rusty rock chips any longer. And, that was my short term goal.

I apologize, you are absolutely correct, it is a base coat Duplicolor Perfect Match. I spoke to my son who has done body work in the past, who is now currently a full time student. We (I that is) decided to not apply clear coat due to high humidity.

I plan on having it powder coated in a year or two. My earlier comment was actually leaning more toward me removing 2500 grit sanding marks from base coat with UC, on speed 5, with a red Meguiar's DA pad.
