  • Hello from Newfoundland, Canada

    Hey all,

    I'll start with the basics and then move on to the more specifics and goal related content;

    Name: Matthew Stockley
    Age: 22
    Location: Newfoundland, Canada
Current Vehicle: Black 2007 VW GTI
Experience: Five years total of paid work: 4.5 Years at a dealership and a half of a year on my own. 6 years of personal experience.

Like above, I have only been seriously detailing for a half of a year now, but I have been "detailing" for about 5 years now. While at the dealership, I have been - I shouldn't say forced, but I am going to say it anyways because my "mentor" was performing in certain ways and I wasn't going to try and correct him due to various reasons - forced into performing a variety of tasks in some less than safe or practical ways, but now that I am on my own and honed my personal skills over quite some time in the driveway, I can honestly say that the most enjoyable work I have ever done was through my own personal mobile detailing. I have had the joy of working on some pretty decent vehicles over this past summer too! Ones such as a 2011 Camaro Intimidator (1 of 11, I believe) and a F-Type V8S. That being said, I joined these forums to further increase my brain power and become a better detailer so I can further my portfolio of successful detailings.

I don't have photos of them all, but here is a small number of vehicles that I have worked on over the last couple of months:

2008 VW R32 - Clay, One step polish, Seal, Wax, and Interior; 9 Hours (Teaching the owner some methods as we went)

2013 Mustang Boss 302 - Clay, One Step Polish, Seal, Wax, and Interior; 6.5 Hours

Jaguar F-Type V8 Supercharged - Clay, Seal, Wax, Interior; 5 Hours (Unfinished in picture, lost the good picture of when it was completed. This is just sealed, nothing else)

2011 Camaro Intimidator (1 of 11) - Clay, Correct, Seal, Wax, and Interior; 21 Hours

Thanks for taking the time to look at my work! Sorry for not being so coherent as I am deathly tired right now

    Matt

Welcome to MOL, Matt! Nice portfolio you've got there - what's your product & pad selection for the one step jobs?

      Thanks Michael!

Note: I prefer not to do a one step just because the results are less than perfect and it really drives my OCD crazy, but if the customer isn't budgeting for a full correction but wants a good shine then I will recommend a one step.

To start my product and pad selection I will do my usual test spot, but this time I am looking for a good balance in shine and correction (don't try to get too much correction because then you will get the normal white hazing, or small controlled defects, which you will have to remove after thus creating a multi-step polish). Here is a list of my combos for the vehicles below:

08' VW R32: Meguiars Microfiber Cutting Disk with Sonax Nanopolish
Mustang Boss 302: Lake Country CCS Green Foam Pad (60ppi) with Sonax Nanopolish

On some other vehicles I have used the Green Foam Pad with AMMO Jewellers Polish or even Sonax Fine Abrasive Paste.

Every vehicle is different, so just take your time with the test spot and try to find your best combination.

      Matt
