  • New DA with MF system

    Hello,
I seen this in the detailing forum from uk, detailing world. Clean your car offered the following, I'm not sure why Meguiars do not up grade their DA to new one one and sell it wth the MF system.

So you want Meguiars to offer a DA with a large stroke like the DAS-21 or Rupes 21?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

I'm pretty sure the folks at Meguiar's, I mean 3M, are aware of what their competitors are doing. The decision to bring, or not, a new product to market is, um, complex.

          ^^ This.

Obviously we have used our microfiber system with a wide variety of tools, not just our own, and obviously the results are pretty fantastic. You don't always need that tall stroke tool though. Yes, it can cut faster due to that tall stroke, but that can also be a detriment to trying to reach tighter areas. And with proper technique you can still cut like crazy with a traditional style DA and our microfiber system. Case in point:

At the NXT training program we did a couple of months back there was a point where I had done some hand sanding on a panel, starting with 600 grit wet and working my way to 2500 grit wet. When it came time to buff out the sanding marks one of the guys recommended the following: Rupes 21, DMX5 Microfiber Xtra Cut disc, M101. My response was that such a process sounded great, but my plan was a G110v2, DMC5 Microfiber Cutting disc, and M100. He countered that this wouldn't be potent enough to handle the task at hand (specifically stating he didn't think M100 could handle it regardless the tool used), and I gladly took him up on the challenge. In a single section pass (up/down, side/side, repeat) at speed 4 with moderate pressure the sanding marks were gone and the paint looked fantastic. The other guy was blown away and said he had to revisit M100. I suggested he revisit the whole system and real dial in his technique.

From a purely personal perspective (ie, this is NOT an official Meguiar's position, let's be real clear here): the Rupes tools are indeed pretty terrific, as is the Flex 3401 to be fair, and in a professional setting where multiple cars are being corrected every single day, it probably makes pretty good sense to utilize them. The same can be said of rotary buffers even with the advancements in DA technology these days. But for the enthusiast or weekend warrior, ask yourself this: what makes more sense to me, spending $400 for a buffer, or really dialing in my technique with a $150 buffer that can do 98% of the high priced tool? I see so many people who's technique with a DA needs a bit of work, and others who simply don't have a clue what they're doing. So many comments about how 7" pads are waaaaay too big for a DA and that you need M105 or Menzerna FG400 to remove any sort of defect, yet we've had fantastic success week after week in our Saturday classes with 7" Soft Buff 2.0 pads, Ultimate Compound, and the G110v2 on a huge variety of paint systems and defects. That's not to say it's always as fast as microfiber and a more aggressive compound... not at all. But for most enthusiasts, justifying a $400 buffer is really hard to do. And many enthusiasts are on a quest to try everything they can get their hands on in hopes of finding some magic combination that will do the job in record time. It's amazing what you can accomplish with really good technique though, almost regardless what tool/pad/liquid combo you use.

I agree with you Michael that the techniques is every thing and yes with the current Meg's DA /UC/UP/MF system you can claim perfect finish. But my point is that, and from marketing point of view and with the new DA technology, I would suggest if Meg's can introduce new DA with different stroke size around 12-15 mm that can be utilized with the new SMAT polish and MF system with the price around 200-230$ I think you will win the market.
