    Bill,
It would almost certainly be a clear coat. Most cars have gone to clear coat paint, but there are always some that are still single stage (for instance, some Toyotas).
Unless the car is older than the mid 1980s, the paint will most likely be clear coat.

Below is the specimen I have been detailing. The car was repainted sometime in 2000 prior to my ownership and have confirmed with the shop it was a urethane based paint and clearcoated. The roof (although it cannot be seen) appears to have what looks like oxidation, or damaged clearcoat. I have worked on this area repeatedly with UC, UP, then switching to 105 and 205. Throwing a liberal amount of M07 deepens the paint, but does not completely get rid of the slight fading that occurs after about a month of driving (car is garaged and not in direct sun). The wax I use now is the Gold Class, and will probably keep using it since it presents the best finish. I wasn't too pleased with NXT 2.0. However, NXT on my black Mercedes presents fantastic results.

When I get the chance, I can take some pictures of the roof and show everyone what I am talking about in a separate thread.

        Looking good - well done!

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.
